Akron RubberDucks News Release
(Erie, Pa.) - Erie's Steven Moya doubled and drove in three runs, and three Erie pitchers combined to strike out 13 batters as the SeaWolves defeated the Akron RubberDucks, 6-1, Thursday night at Jerry Uht Park.
After winning the first two games of the series, the RubberDucks (49-37) dropped the final two to settle for a series split.
Moya stroked a two-run double in the first inning off Duke von Schamann (3-3) as the SeaWolves (36-47) jumped to a 2- 0 lead. He later added a sacrifice fly in the seventh, giving him three RBI for the second night in a row. A potential EL All- Star, Moya now has 59 RBI on the season.
The RubberDucks managed to pull to within 2-1, in the second inning on a double by Bryan LaHair, a single by Anthony Gallas and a wild pitch by Erie starter Warwick Saupold (4-8). Saupold came off the DL earlier Thursday in time to make the start. He worked five innings and struck out eight to pick up his first win since May 31st .
Von Schamann gave up two more in the fifth. He left in favor of lefty Giovanni Soto after 4 2/3 innings. Although he only allowed four hits, von Schamann matched his season high with five walks.
After Saupold departed, lefty Kenny Faulk struck out three in two innings, and Bryan Augenstein fanned two in his two innings for a total of 13 K's on the night. Erie improved to 5-7 in the season series against the RubberDucks. The teams will meet again at Canal Park on July 17th .
Gallas went 2-4 for Akron, his fourth straight multi-hit game of the series. He extended his hitting streak to seven games.
Ollie Linton singled in his final at-bat, and also has a seven-game hitting streak. Ronny Rodriguez was called out on strikes in the fifth inning, and was ejected by home plate umpire Chris Tipton after objecting to the call.
The RubberDucks will now return to Canal Park for a brief, three-game series against the Bowie Baysox beginning Friday night at 6:35. LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (3-5, 5.15) will start for the Baysox, and RHP Joe Colon (8-4, 2.79) is the announced starter for Akron. The game will be broadcast on WARF 1350 AM and www.AkronRubberDucks.com.
