NHLer Chiodo to play in Wheeling this weekend

WHEELING, WV – The Wheeling Nailers announce that goaltender Andy Chiodo had been assigned to the team from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League. The AHL Penguins have also recalled goaltender Dany Sabourin from the Nailers.

Chiodo could play his first game for the Nailers at WesBanco Arena this weekend in his third career assignment with the team. Last season Chiodo played two games with the Nailers, both on the road. He has also had two starts for the Nailers this season, again both games away from Wheeling.

Chiodo, 21, had posted a 3-6-1 record with a 3.58 goals against average and one shutout in 11 games with the Penguins this season. In two games with the Nailers this season, he has a record of 1-1-0 with a 1.94 goals against average and a .931 save percentage.

The 5'11", 194-pound native of Toronto, Ontario spent time last season with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Wheeling and Pittsburgh.

Chiodo appeared in eight games for Pittsburgh last season. He posted a record of 3-4-1 with a 3.46 goals against average and a .892 save percentage. In 44 games with the AHL Penguins, he posted a record of 18-19-2, with a 2.40 goals against average and four shutouts during his rookie season. Chiodo posted a 9-7 record with three shutouts and a .916 save percentage in 18 post-season games. He ranked among AHL goaltenders in shutouts (tied for first), minutes played (second with 1048), wins (third), saves (third with 412) and goals against average (eleventh) during the 2004 Calder Cup Playoffs.

Sabourin, 24, has appeared in two games with the Penguins this season, posting a 1-1-0 record and a 1.22 goals against average. In 23 games this season with the Nailers, he has a 16-5-1 record with a 1.60 goals against average and five shutouts. Sabourin ranks among ECHL goaltenders in shutouts (first), wins (second), goals against average (second), minutes played (second with 1353), save percentage (fourth with a .944 save percentage) and saves (tied for fourth with 605).

The Nailers play two home games this weekend. The Nailers host Atlantic City at 7:30p.m. Friday for Smirnoff Ice "Vegas is Calling, Get Out" Casino Night. One lucky fan will win a trip for two to Las Vegas. On Sunday, The Nailers host Toledo at 5:05p.m. Fans can join the Nailers on the ice for a skate with the team after the game.
