January 4, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Peoria Rivermen News Release
Peoria, Ill. (January 4, 2005) â Head Coach/Director of Hockey Operations Jason Christie of the Peoria Rivermen of the ECHL announced today that rookie defenseman James Sanford has been reassigned to the Hamilton Bulldogs of the American Hockey League (AHL) â the primary affiliate of the NHL's Montreal Canadiens.
Sanford â a 5-foot-10, 190-pound native Alma, New Brunswick â posted 11 points (2g, 9a) in 24 games with the Rivermen to open his rookie season. The 20-year-old backliner was reassigned to Peoria from the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies by the NHL's Montreal Canadiens in exchange for forward Jason Notermann on October 21, just a day before the season opened. Sanford signed to a two-way (AHL/ECHL) contract by Montreal on October 8.
This past September, Sanford was invited on a try-out to Montreal's Annual Rookie Camp & Tournament, where he finished with two assists in three games before his reassignment to Hamilton. He spent the majority (three and a half years) of his four-year Major Junior "A" career with the Moncton Wildcats of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), collecting 181 points (55g, 126a) and 456 penalty minutes (PIM) in 231 career games. Last season, he ranked first among team defensemen in points and sixth overall with Moncton, and in 2002-2003, his third Major Junior "A" season, he ranked third on the team in assists (45) and points (61), while registering single-season Major Junior "A" career bests in those respective categories.
The Peoria Rivermen are a proud affiliate of the NHL's St. Louis Blues and a member of the ECHL â The Premier "AA" Hockey League. On Tuesday, January 4, Peoria travels to Fresno, Ca. to take on the Falcons at Save Mart Center. Game time is 9:00 p.m. On Wednesday, January 5, the Rivermen battle the San Diego Gulls at the San Diego Sports Arena. Game time is 9:00 p.m. On Friday, January 7 and Saturday, January 8, the Rivermen stop in Las Vegas to do battle with the Wranglers. Game times are 9:00 p.m. at the Orleans Arena. Season ticket packages and group tickets for 2004-2005 are available by calling the Rivermen at 309.676.1040.
