Erie SeaWolves News Release

After an hour and nine minute rain delay, the New Britain Rock Cats defeated the Erie SeaWolves in the first game of a four game set at New Britain Stadium by a 9-4 final.

Erie jumped out to an early lead in the first inning when Jason Krizan lead off with a double and advanced to third on a Jeff McVaney single. Dean Green then picked up his first RBI of the day when he singled home Krizan to put Erie on top 1-0.

The Erie lead soon diminished when David Dahl bottom half off with a double and advanced to third on a Mike Tauchman single. A Jordan Patterson double then plated both Dahl and Tauchman to put New Britain up 2-1.

The Rock Cats added four runs in the bottom half of the inning when Joey Wong and Jan Vasquez lead off with back-to-back singles and were moved over on a Zach Osborne sacrifice bunt. Dahl then singled to score Wong from third and tie the ballgame. Vasquez then scored on a balk from Erie starter Tommy Collier and Noel Cuevas singled home Dahl. Cuevas eventually came around to score on a Pat Valaika single to put New Britain up 6-1 after two innings.

The SeaWolves responded in the third inning when Green crushed his 13th homer of the year, which cut the lead to 6-2.

New Britain then tacked on three more runs in the sixth inning to take a commanding 9-2 lead. Wong and Vasquez led the inning off with back-to-back singles to put runners at the corners. Wong then scored from third on an errant throw to first on a pickoff move from Collier while a Cuevas single brought home Vasquez. Tauchman then ripped a double that scored Cuevas and capped off the three run sixth for the Rock Cats.

Erie added two runs in the seventh on a Wade Gaynor solo homerun and a Dean Green RBI single, but it would not be enough. New Britain held Erie scoreless the rest of the way to take the first game of the series.

Collier (3-1) took the loss on the bump for the SeaWolves as he gave up eight runs on 11 hits while walking one and fanning four.
