One Goal Was All They Needed
The Wheeling Nailers and South Carolina Stingrays enter game four of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinal Series on Friday, with the Nailers carrying a 3-0 lead into their second home game of the set. On Wednesday night, the Nailers needed only one goal to capture their third victory, as Christiaan Minella broke a scoreless deadlock with nine seconds remaining in the second period, tipping in a point shot by Dustin Stevenson. Mike Condon was perfect between the pipes, stopping all 38 shots he faced for his second shutout of the series, defeating Allen York, who made 25 saves for South Carolina.
Defense Dominating the Series
All eight series in the first round of the Kelly Cup Playoffs have seen at least three games played, and none of the other seven have totaled fewer goals than have been scored between the Nailers and Stingrays. In fact, the two sides have combined for just nine goals in the three tilts, with no club scoring more than three in a single game. Aside from this series, the next lowest scoring groupings through three games in the ECHL are Kalamazoo/Greenville (11) and Bakersfield/Utah (11).
Minella Making Them Count
Forward Christiaan Minella was responsible for the lone goal in Wheeling's 1-0 victory on Wednesday night, as he recorded his second tally of the postseason. Dating back to last year with the AHL's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, Minella has three goals in his last nine playoff tilts, with two of the three counting for game winners. The fourth year pro was limited to 23 regular season games this year, but still managed to rack up 13 goals, six assists, and 19 points, before adding two goals in three postseason games. Minella and Chaz Johnson are the only two players with multiple goals in the series, while Max MacKay leads the way with three points (all assists).
50 Could Be a Special One
During their 22-year history, the Nailers have appeared in the playoffs on 12 different occasions, winning a total of ten series. On Friday night, Wheeling will be in search of its 11th series victory, and doing so would also allow the team to collect its 50th postseason win in 99 games all-time. The Nailers' most recent series win came during the 2011 Eastern Conference Semifinals against Greenville (4-3), while their last sweep took place in the first round of the 1996 Riley Cup Playoffs against the Columbus Chill (3-0). Wheeling has achieved two sweeps in its history, but neither occurred in a best-of-seven series.
Four in 2011, as They Enter Four in 2014
Wheeling and South Carolina are playing in their second head-to-head playoff series all-time, after the two sides did battle in the 2011 Eastern Conference Quarterfinals. That year, the Nailers eliminated the Stingrays in four games (best-of-five format), winning both games in North Charleston Coliseum, before splitting a pair of tilts at WesBanco Arena. Including the clinching game that year, Wheeling has won three of its last four home contests against South Carolina, improving to 7-4 in its backyard all time. The Nailers also have the overall lead, coming out on top 15 times in 25 games.
