Steelheads Take the Series Lead with 2-1 Win
April 25, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL)
Colorado Eagles News Release
LOVELAND, Colo. - Eagles forward Brock Nixon netted a late third period goal to avoid a shutout as the Colorado Eagles (2-3) fell, 2-1, to the Idaho Steelheads (3-2) at the Budweiser Events Center in Game 5 of the Western Conference Quarterfinals. The Steelheads take the 3-2 series lead back to Idaho going into Games 6 and 7. At the 15:51 mark of the first period Steelheads forward Brett Robinson beat Eagles netminder Marc Cheverie from just above the hashes to give Idaho the 1-0 advantage heading into the first intermission.
The second stanza saw no scoring for either team, as Cheverie and Steelheads goaltender Josh Robinson shut down all of the shots taken on them.
Just over five minutes into the third frame, Idaho forward Gaelan Patterson netted his second goal of the series to extend the Steelheads lead to 2-0. Nixon would finally get the Eagles on the board with a backhanded rebound from the low slot with just three seconds left in the third frame. The Steelheads took home the 2-1 victory to gain the 3-2 advantage in the series.
Colorado was stellar on the penalty kill, denying Idaho on six power plays, including two 5-on-3's. However, the Eagles were not able to capitalize on the power play, going 0-for-4 on the night.
"The fact of the matter is, the goal is to get to four games, we have to win two more," expressed Head Coach Chris Stewart. "There is no magic formula; we have to find the way to get the puck in the net."
"We aren't thinking about winning two games, we are just thinking about winning that first period," said Cheverie "When you think you have to win six periods, that's a pretty big mountain, you just take it one step at a time, one shift at a time. We are just going to focus on when that puck drops and winning that first period."
The Eagles head back to Boise to take on the Steelheads in CenturyLink Arena on Monday, April 28 for Game 6.
