Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
CINCINNATI, Ohio - Scott Tanski scored the game winning goal early into the third period as the Orlando Solar Bears (1-3) defeated the Cyclones (3-1) by a 2-0 final score in front of 2,416 at U.S. Bank Arena on Friday night. The victory extends the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals for the Solar Bears as they continue to fight for survival in the best-of-seven series that Cincinnati leads, 3-1. Goaltender Maxime Clermont (W, 25 saves, 1-2-0-0) was impressive in net, turning aside all 25 of Cincinnati's shots on goal and earning his first shutout of the postseason.
Both clubs exchanged power play opportunities to start the game, but neither team was able to find the back of the net. Orlando sent three more players to the penalty box before the end of the period, resulting in several scoring chances for the home team. But Cincinnati was unable to put any points on the board, despite outshooting the Solar Bears, 10-5, in the stanza.
The parade to the penalty box continued into the middle frame as each team earned another power play opportunity. Though intensity ratcheted up, the tilt remained scoreless through 40 minutes and the Cyclones headed into the final period, outshooting their opponent, 18-14.
Orlando finally broke the stalemate when Tanski buried a rebound for his first goal of the postseason at 1:57. Although the Cyclones applied substantial pressure for the rest of the frame, the score held until the Cyclones pulled goaltender Rob Madore (L, 19 saves, 3-1-0-0) and Wayne MacLeod recorded an empty net tally at 19:31 to close the game.
"You have to expect [that effort]," said alternate captain Dan Eves. "They're playing for their lives. It's a game at home that we wanted to win and we came out pretty hard...Give them credit. They played well tonight."
"We definitely want to finish it off on home ice," he added about tomorrow night's Game 5 contest. "We don't want to have to make that trip all the way back down to Orlando. We'll be better tomorrow."
