Knocking on History's Door

The Wheeling Nailers enter Friday's game, having earned at least one point in each of their last ten games, posting an 8-0-2 record over that span. The streak has given the Nailers a five-point lead in the Atlantic Division over the Reading Royals, while also placing Wheeling in a three-way tie for third place in the Eastern Conference with Evansville and Orlando. This is the fifth time in team history that the Nailers have earned at least one point in ten consecutive games, with the all-time record being 14, which was set during the 1997-98 campaign.

The Curse of the 'Clones

After starting the season with a 2-3-0 record, the Reading Royals have rallied to win eight of their last 11 games, improving to 10-6-0 on the season. Recently, Reading has won five of its last seven contests, with the only two defeats coming at the hands of the Cincinnati Cyclones, including a 4-1 setback last Friday. The majority of the Royals' success has come against the Atlantic Division, as they enter Friday night with a 7-1-0 mark against Elmira and Wheeling.

Congratulations, Condo

Nailers goaltender Mike Condon earned ECHL recognition twice this past week, as he took home CCM ECHL Goaltender of the Week honors, as well as CCM ECHL Rookie of the Month honors. Condon has been a major part of Wheeling's recent success, having gone 5-0-1 in his last six starts, while posting a 7-1-1 record during the month of November. Last week, Mike stopped 100 of the 103 shots he faced, including a 38-save shutout against Cincinnati on Wednesday.

Getting Closer By the Game

The Nailers and Royals have met four times thus far this season, with Reading winning each of the four head-to-head contests. However, Wheeling has been chipping away at its division rival, closing the margin in each successive game. The Royals opened the season series with 6-2 and 2-0 wins at WesBanco Arena, before the Nailers got to within one goal, in 2-1 and 3-2 setbacks at Santander Arena, earning a point in the most recent clash. Reading has had the advantage historically, coming out on top in 70 of the 120 all-time games, while also winning or tying each of the last six season series.

Double Digits in the AHL

Earlier this week, the phone rang in Wheeling once again, as four more Nailers made their way to the American Hockey League. The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins recalled forward Anton Zlobin and defenseman Harrison Ruopp, while the Hamilton Bulldogs recalled forward Ben Duffy. In addition, Hamilton signed forward Scott Zurevinski to a 25-game professional tryout. Once Zlobin, Ruopp, and Zurevinski make their season debuts, Wheeling will have had ten players suit up at both the AHL and ECHL levels this season.
