Atlanta Gladiators News Release
DULUTH, Ga. - One of Gladiators forward Mike Embach's two goals tied the game early in the third, but Gwinnett fell in a shootout 4-3 to the Kalamazoo Wings Friday night at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.
Just 68 seconds into the final period of regulation, Embach took a pass on the two-man advantage from Daniel Spivak and drove to the slot, wristing a shot past Wings (9-6-0-2) goalie Joel Martin to the near side to tie the game at 3-3.
The Gladiators (6-13-0-2) outshot Kalamazoo 10-5 in the third but couldn't solve Martin one more time. In overtime the tide turned, and Gwinnett goaltender Louis Domingue turned aside all six of Kalamazoo's shots to just two for Gwinnett.
In the shootout, both Justin Taylor for the Wings and Joey Haddad for the Gladiators scored in round 1. Kalamazoo's Yannick Veilleux and Gwinnett's Josh Currie both scored in round 4 as well, but Eric Kattelus was about to beat Domingue in round 5, while Evan Bloodoff was denied to seal the K-Wings 4-3win.
Martin made 33 stops in goal for the Wings, while Domingue made 31 saves and took the loss. Gwinnett finished 1-for-6 on the powerplay while holdingKalamazoo to 0-for-2.
The Gladiators next game is Sunday at 3:00 p.m. in Greenville, after which the Gladiators return home Friday December 13th to host South Carolina at 7:05 p.m.
Kalamazoo jumped on Gwinnett late in the first thanks to a couple of highlight reel goals. Yanni Gourde opened the scoring with a shorthanded tally at 16:20. The forward kicked an errant pass to his stick in front of the net and tucked the puck around a sprawling Louis Domingue as Gourde was falling to put theWings up 1-0. Taylor completed a quick one-timer setup point blank over theglove of Domingue at 19:16 to give Kalamazoo a two-goal edge.
Gwinnett bounced back in the second. Embach took a pass from Haddad, drove to the net-front on a partial breakaway and lifted a backhander over Martin 7:02 into the period. Mike Matczak put the lead back at two goals for the Wings at 9:49, but Gwinnett again had an answer.
Domingue handled the puck at the top of his crease, and hit Kurtis Bartliff with a homerun outlet pass in stride at the Kalamazoo blueline. Bartliff then fought off a Wings defenseman, and put a backhand shot over Martin to pull the Gladiators within one goal at 3-2 through two periods.
The Gladiators are members of the ECHL, the nation's premier "AA" hockey league and are affiliated with the Phoenix Coyotes of the NHL. All home games are played at the 11,355-seat Arena at Gwinnett Center, located just off I-85 on Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth.
