Nailers Take Three of Four Points against Jackals

January 30, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release

ELMIRA, NY - The Wheeling Nailers played the second of four straight road games on Saturday night, and for the second evening in a row, they came away with at least a point. After a 4-1 win on Friday, Wheeling was unable to duplicate its success, but did manage to force overtime with a 3-3 tie. Unfortunately, the Elmira Jackals had the say in the shootout, scoring on two of four attempts for a 4-3 victory at First Arena. Paul Cianfrini tallied his first two goals of the season during regulation.

The Nailers got off to a fast and exciting start for the second night in a row, opening the scoring just 2:24 into the contest. Mathew Maione led a power play rush into the offensive zone, working his way in on the left side, before setting up Paul Cianfrini at the middle of the blueline. Cianfrini blasted a one-timer from that spot, finding the left side of the net. 1:50 later, Cianfrini got his second tally of the night. Matt Tabrum helped the puck back to the point, where Cianfrini had a quick passing exchange with Harrison Ruopp. Ultimately, Paul took a shot from the right wall, connecting with the left side of the cage. Elmira netted a power play goal to pull within one, with 7:47 left. Cason Hohman fed Allan McPherson, who banked a shot off of Chris Langkow and inside of the right post.

The Jackals' success on the man advantage continued into the second period, as they tied the game, then eventually pulled ahead for a brief time. Both power play goals came from Tyler Currier. On the equalizer, Zach Tolkinen kept the play alive at the left point, before taking a shot, which was gloved away by Casey DeSmith. However, Currier was there to pot home the rebound. Later in the frame, Currier tipped in Tolkinen's long distance try, putting the home team ahead. Wheeling had an answer before the end of the stanza, also taking advantage of a power play. Maione rushed the puck into the offensive zone, connecting with Jarrett Burton, whose shot from the left side of the slot got deflected by Jordan Kwas for his first marker as a Nailer.

Both teams stepped up their defenses in the third period, while the power plays went away, leading to a tie game after regulation. Seven shots in overtime failed to settle anything, forcing a shootout. Cody Wydo scored first for the Nailers in round two, but Cason Hohmann answered right away, and Mike Seidel got the deciding goal in round four for the Jackals.

After starting goalie Alex Vazzano was beaten twice on six shots, CJ Motte took over in relief for Elmira, earning the win with 35 saves on 36 shots. Casey DeSmith suffered the shootout setback for Wheeling, despite turning away 35 of the 38 shots he faced.

The Nailers will face the Brampton Beast at Powerade Centre on Sunday, with face-off taking place at 2:00. Wheeling will play two home games next weekend on Friday and Saturday, both against Reading. The weekend starts with a Flat Screen Friday, presented by The Highlands and Bordas & Bordas, in addition to a Frosty Friday. Saturday's game is Pittsburgh Steelers Night, starring Brett Keisel.
