Wheeling Nailers News Release
Wheeling, WV - The Wheeling Nailers (2-6-0) used two Kurtis McLean, third-period goals to beat the Johnstown Chiefs (4-5-0) by a score of 4-2 at WesBanco Arena on Sunday afternoon. McLean leads the team with six goals and 13 points.
Johnstown drew first blood at the 8:39 mark of the first period on Randy Rowe's first of two goals in the game. After a couple of Nailers collided in their own zone Adam Henrich fed it across to Rowe who beat Andy Franck with a wrist shot from the slot. Although the score was 1-0 Johnstown at the end of the first period, the shots were 14-13 Wheeling after one evenly matched period of play.
Bo Cheesman tied the score with his first goal of the young season 6:00 into the second frame. Joe Jensen fed the puck to Paul Bissonnette who bounced the puck across the crease and on to the stick of Cheesman. It was a power-play goal as John Adams was off for hooking.
Just 1:18 later the Nailers took their first lead of the game. Jordan Cameron coasted along the boards and just before he circled behind the Johnstown net, fed a pass in front that Jon Foster banged home for his first goal ECHL goal. Randy Rowe would answer right back for the Chiefs with a slapshot that torched the glove of Franck under a minute later.
With five minutes to go in the second session, Cheesman failed to convert on a breakaway and after a whistled slammed his stick against the glass. The glass broke and Cheesman was sent off with a 10-minute unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. The repair prompted an early second intermission and the ice was cut before the final minutes of the second period.
Sean Collins picked up assists on both of McLean's goals in the third period to add to his team lead with eight assists. Just over three minutes into the final frame, Collins took a pass from Bissonnette and slid it across to McLean who beat Morgan Cey with a wrist shot to the glove side. Then with Grant McNeill in the box for interference, Collins caused a turnover and slid the puck to McLean for the shorthanded insurance goal.
The Nailers managed a season-high 45 shots on net while holding Johnstown to a third-period total of four and 28 on the game. Wheeling will play their next four games on the road with a pair in Cincinnati this upcoming weekend.
The next home game for the Nailers will be Wednesday, Nov. 22 at 7:00pm. It will be Steelers Night as the Nailers welcome Super Bowl Champions Jeff Reed and Bryant McFadden to the arena for their game with the Trenton Titans.
