Steelheads Top Grizzlies 4-1 To Complete Three-Game Sweep
November 5, 2006 - ECHL (ECHL)
Idaho Steelheads News Release
Boise, ID - Three skaters recorded multiple points, as the Steelheads used a total team effort to defeat the Utah Grizzlies 4-1 in front of 3,207 fans at Qwest Arena on Sunday afternoon, completing the three-game sweep of their division foe.
Steelheads' goaltender Steve Silverthorn made 26 saves to improve to a league-best 7-0-0-0, as the Steelheads improved to 11-1-0 on home ice dating back to the end of last season. Since 2005-2006, Silverthorn is 17-3-0 in his last 20 decisions.
After a scoreless first period, in which the shots were 10-9 in favor of the Steelheads, the home team struck late in the second period to get on the board. Winger Francis Wathier was able to dig the puck out of the left wing corner in the Grizzlies' zone and feed Tuomas Mikkonen who found an opening at the left circles. Mikkonen's shot was kicked aside by Grizzlies' goaltender Jon Volp (32 saves) but the rebound came to Marty Flichel who finished it off for his fifth goal. The goal, which came at 14:43, allowed Flichel to extend his scoring streak to a season-long, eight games. Flichel actually began 2005-2006 season with an eight-game scoring streak, when he recorded 13 points over that stretch. Flichel has 10 points thus far this season.
Just over three minutes later, the Steelheads got to another Volp rebound and made the score 2-0. This time it was Justin Williams, who finished off Travis Wight's snap shot from the high slot. Wathier also got a helper on Williams' second of the season, which came at the 17:59 mark. Wight's assist was the first of his professional career.
The Steelheads registered 24 shots through two periods, while the Grizzlies had 17.
In the third period, the Steelheads struck twice just 1:13 apart to widen the gap. At 12:55 Derek Nesbitt hammered a one-timer over Volp for a power play goal, his fifth of the season. Winger Lance Galbraith and defenseman Mike Gabinet drew the assists. Then Mikkonen got his second goal in as many nights off a Galbraith feed to make the score 4-0. On the play, Grizzlies' defenseman Ian Forbes lost the puck to Galbraith deep in the visitors' end and Galbraith hit Mikkonen in the slot for a shot that beat Volp cleanly.
The Grizzlies' got on the board at 15:19 of the third period ending Silverthorn's bid at a shutout, as Eric Przepiorka netted his first professional goal on a spinning wrist shot. Grizzlies' forward Jimmie Kraft threw the puck into the slot where Przepiorka found it and buried it over the glove hand of Silverthorn to round out the game's scoring. Forward Andy Sertich also got an assist.
The Steelheads six-game home stand continues on Friday, November 10 against the Stockton Thunder. The puck drops at 7:10 p.m. MST. Single-game tickets can be purchased via www.idahosteelheads.com
