Nailers Dominate Bombers
October 31, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release
The Wheeling Nailers improved their league best record to 5-0-1 with a dominating 6-1 win over the previously undefeated Dayton Bombers (3-1-0) Friday night at WesBanco Arena.
All the treats were with the Nailers on this Halloween night game as they tricked the Bombers right from the start and scared away starting goalie David Shantz (2-1-0) with 3 first period goals.
Ohio State product Tommy Goebel scored 2 of the goals (his 6th and 7th) to continue to pace all Nailers and all ECHL rookies in scoring. Four other Nailers lit the lamp including Jordan Morrison (4th), Brian Ewing (1st), Nick Johnson (4th) and Tobias Holm (3rd).
Nailers with multiple points were Johnson (1-3-4), Ewing (1-2-3), Morrison (1-2-3), Goebel (2-0-2) and Rob Sirianni (0-2-2).
Dayton's Dan Riedel connected on a slap-shot from the right dot with 3:28 remaining to break up goalie David Brown's bid for a shutout. Brown improved to 2-0-0 with the Nailers in his first game back from Wilkes Barre/Scranton as he turned away 29 of 30 Bombers shots. About the middle of the 3rd he denied Dayton's Mike McLean on a terrific stop sliding from his to right to turn it away and keep his shutout bid intact for the time-being.
Three of Wheeling's 5 goals came on the power play improving their season mark to 14/39 (35.9%). The penalty kill stopped 7 of Dayton's 8 man advantages.
Wheeling dominated the first period and recorded the first 10 shots on goal of the game. They outshot Dayton 17-5 for the 1st and registered a 3-0 lead.
Goebel's 2nd goal of the night in the 2nd period made it 4-0 at the 2nd break and the Nailers cruised from there with 2 more goals in the 3rd to build their lead to 6-0 before the Bombers broke the shutout as the game was winding down.
The Nailers now have a 3 point lead in the North Division over the 2nd place Elmira Jackals.
They wrap up their lengthy run of 6 out of their first 7 games at home on Saturday night with a 7:35 tilt vs. the Johnstown Chiefs. Saturday's promotion is Sidney Crosby mini-stick give-away night courtesy of Tim Horton's. Free Sidney Crosby mini-sticks for the first 1,000 kids age 14 and younger through the WesBanco Arena turnstiles.
