Reading Royals News Release
Reading, PA - In a rematch of last season's North Division Finals, the Reading Royals (1-4-0 = 2; 7th North Division) of the ECHL fell behind to the Cincinnati Cyclones (1-3-1=3; 6th North Division) in the first period and were unable to mount a come back, losing 5-3. This game continued a trend for the Royals, who played from behind for the vast majority of the game and have now trailed the opposition for 220:39 of the 300 game minutes played so far this season. The festive atmosphere surrounding tonight's "Hockey Night in Canada in Reading" Halloween night celebration, in which both teams wore replica jerseys of their National Hockey League affiliates-the Toronto Maple Leafs for the Royals and the Montreal Canadiens for the Cyclones-was somewhat spoiled by the prospect of Reading losing the team's third consecutive home game. Goaltender Danny Taylor (loss, 0-3-0; 19/23) sustained his third loss of the season for the Royals; while Cincinnati's Loic Lacasse (win, 1-1-0; 36/39) picked up his first ECHL win. The Royals went 1-6 with the man advantage; while Cincinnati scored three power play goals in five tries.
For the fourth time in five games, the opposition scored the game's first goal against the Royals. Cincinnati struck 6:12 into the first when Michael Cohen, who was released from the Royals' training camp earlier this year, drilled a laser out of the left circle that beat Taylor to the short side 6:12 into the first. Cohen made it 2-0 with 1:54 remaining in the first, when Matt Syroczynski slid a pass across the top of the Royals' crease, and Cohen punched it through for his third of the season. Cincinnati extended the lead to 3-0 early in the second with their first power play goal of the night. Defenseman Steve Makway took a wrister from the high slot that forward Jimmy Kilpatrick re-directed to the right side of Reading's goal, where Olivier Latendresse was waiting for the slam dunk 2:46 into the period.
The Royals got on the board with a power play goal of their own at the 9:47 mark of the second. Reading won an offensive zone face-off and forced the puck to the front of the Cyclones' goal. Forward Tyler Doig crashed the net and created a loose puck in the crease, which Brock Hooton found and stuffed in for his second goal of the year. Cincinnati re-gained the three goal lead 13:05 into the second with another power play goal. On this one, it appeared that the Reading penalty killers gained possession of the puck in the defensive end and were going to be able to clear the zone. The Cyclones created a turnover, however, and Kilpatrick ended up with the puck at the left side of Reading's goal. Kilpatrick threw the puck to the top of the crease, where it hit the skate of a back-checking forward for the Royals and ended up in the net to make it 4-1 Cincy. The Royals cut the lead back to two (4-2), twenty-five seconds later, when Cincinnati goaltender Lacasse misplayed a puck behind his own net, and Mac Faulkner stole for the quick wrap and jam to register his second goal of the year.
In the third, the Royals cut the lead to one with 9:48 remaining when Jeff Corey and Kevin Harvey battled to gain entry into the offensive end and free Dan Rudisuela for a shot from the slot. Rudisuela didn't waste the opportunity drilling the puck low glove side on Lacasse for his second goal of the year. The Royals battled down the stretch, but were unable to get the equalizer; and, in the waning moments, were called for too many men when an attempt to get the sixth attacker on the ice went awry. Then, after the short-handed Royals did successfully get the goaltender off for an extra skater, the Cyclones' Latendresse struck for an empty net power play goal with just 8.2 seconds remaining to close out the scoring.
