Steelheads Fall in Overtime

Elmira, NY - The Idaho Steelheads and Elmira Jackals went down to the wire tonight at First Arena in Elmira, NY, but it was the Jackals who came out on the good end of an overtime finish. Wes Cunningham broke the tie near the end of the fourth frame to put his team over .500 (4-3-0). The Steelheads fell to 2-1-1-1, having won 4-3 in the first game of the two-game set on Wednesday.

Idaho outshot Elmira 14-6 in a scoreless first period. The visitors got on the board first on a Ben Nelson goal at 8:14 of the second period, with an assist going to Riley Weselowski. Elmira tied the game with a power play marker by Pierre-Luc Faubert at 13:29.

In the third period, Benoit Doucet put the Jackals ahead with a tally at 10:51; the assists went to Faubert and Ryan Gibbons. Brent Shepheard capitalized on a turnover in the Elmira defensive end at 13:16 to tie the game for the Steelheads. The goal was unassisted.

Elmira outshot Idaho 6-0 in the overtime period, which was scoreless and headed for a shootout when Cunningham took a pass from Faubert and put the puck behind Steelheads goalie Rejean Beauchemin for the game-winner with 20 seconds to go.

Beauchemin stopped 25 of 28 Elmira shots, while Mitch O'Keefe stopped 29 of 31 Idaho attempts.

The Steelheads continue their eastern road trip in Reading, PA Saturday (5:05 pm MDT), then on to Trenton, NJ for an afternoon tilt on Sunday (2:00 pm MST).
