
Gladiators Fall to Sea Wolves, 7-2

The Gwinnett Gladiators gave up four power play goals and four goals in the first period en route to a 7-2 loss to the Mississippi Sea Wolves on Friday night at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum. Bruce Graham and Brandon Kaleniecki scored for Gwinnett in the loss as the Gladiators fall to 1-1-2 on the season with the loss.
Mississippi jumped all over the Gladiators in the first period opening up a 4-0 lead on Gwinnett by the end of the period. Mississippi took a 1-0 lead on the Gladiators just 23 seconds into the first period as Mathieu Melanson was able to roll the puck off of Gladiators netmdiner Charlie Effinger and into the back of the net for the early lead.
The Sea Wolves took a 2-0 lead at 7:33 of the period on their first of two power play goals of the first period as Frederik Cabana, who was working down the right wing, was able to tuck the puck inside the far post past Effinger for the marker.
Mike Wirll picked the pocked of a Gladiators defenseman in the Gwinnett slot, turned and ripped a snapshot past Effinger to push the Sea Wolves lead to 3-0 at 10:56 of the first period.
Mississippi was able to take a 4-0 lead on the Gladiators with just 36 seconds left in the first period with their second power play goal of the period. Alexandre Parent was able to find the puck in a pile up in the slot and beat Effinger for the marker. Jason Tejchma collected his third assist of the period for Mississippi on the goal.
The Gladiators and Sea Wolves exchanged goals in the second period leaving Mississippi on top by four goals after two periods. The Sea Wolves took a 5-0 lead on Gwinnett with the first goal of the second period just 2:55 into the stanza. Cabana notched the goal, his second of the contest, as he beat Effinger from point blank range in the slot for the marker.
Gwinnett broke the shutout bid of Mississippi netminder Ryan Munce at 6:30 of the second period on a 5-on-3 power play. Graham took a pass from Brad Schell in the right wing circle and walked in untouched on Munce and ripped a quick snapshot past the netminder for his third goal of the season. Jeff Mason also notched an assist on the marker for Gwinnett.
Mississippi added a sixth goal on a 5-on-3 power play with just 3:24 left in the third period. Wirll notched his second of the game for Mississippi as he beat Effinger from along the goal line for the marker.
The Gladiators got one back late in the third period as Kaleniecki's first goal of the season cut the Mississippi lead back to 6-2 at 17:13 of the third period. Kaleniecki capitalized on a Sea Wolves miscue and flicked the puck into an open net past an out of position Munce for the unassisted Gwinnett goal.
Continuing on a five minute major power play in the third period, Ryan Cruthers rolled the puck past Effinger out of a gaggle of players in the slot to cap the scoring and giving the Sea Wolves a 7-2 lead with 1:26 left in the third period.
Effinger finished with 23 saves in the loss for Gwinnett while the Gladiators gave up 4 power play goals on seven penalty-killing opportunities in the contest. Gwinnett finished out shooting the Sea Wolves 38-30 in the loss.
