Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release

Bowling Green, KY - In the second game of a four-game series at Bowling Green Ballpark, the Bowling Green Hot Rods used seven shutout innings from starter Jose Mujica and a pair of solo homers by second basemen Peter Maris to shutout the Lake County Captains by a score of 3-0 on Tuesday night.

One day after losing to the Captains in the ninth inning when they successfully executed a hidden ball trick for the final out the game, the Hot Rods pitching staff combined for their fifth shutout of the year, holding the Lake County lineup to just three hits.

For the first seven innings, Mujica (W, 4-3) put together the best start of his young career, holding the Captains without a run on two hits while only allowing three baserunners. The seven innings were a career-best for the Rays #24 prospect, who now has six starts this year of giving up two runs or less in five innings of work or work.

Offensively, the Hot Rods struck first in the fourth inning when outfielder David Olmedo-Barrera manufactured a run by himself against Captains starter Matt Esparza (L, 7-5).

Against the reigning Midwest League Pitcher of the Week, Olmedo-Barrera laid down a bunt single to start the surge. He then stole second, and in the process of trying to steal third, Captains catcher Sicnarf Loopstok made a throwing error that allowed Olmedo-Barrera to score the first run of the game.

Following the Olmedo-Barrera led rally, the Hot Rods got the rest of their run support off the bat of Maris. In the fifth inning, the UC-Santa Barbara product crushed a solo homer that snuck inside the right-field foul pole to make the score 2-0. During his next at-bat in the eighth inning, Maris launched another solo shot over the wall in left-center field against Captains reliever Christian Meister to give the Hot Rods their final run of the game.

For Maris, the homers were his fourth and fifth of the year. The multi-homer game was the first of his professional career and the second total multi-homer game for the Hot Rods this year. The first one was by David Rodriguez on May 10 against Lansing.

To secure the victory and the shutout, closer Diego Castillo tossed two scoreless frames for his seventh save of the year. It was the second two-inning save for Castillo this year.

Bowling Green will continue with a four-game series against the Lake County Captains at Bowling Green Ballpark on Wednesday. They will send lefty Michael Velasquez to the mound.

First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM.
