Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release

Bowling Green, KY - In front of a season-high 5,277 fans at Bowling Green Ballpark, the Bowling Green Hot Rods lost to the Lake County Captains by a score 3-2 on a hidden ball trick when the potential game-tying run was on second on Monday night.

To get the July 4 festivities started, the Hot Rods struck first when outfielder Zacrey Law launched a solo homer over the left-field wall off of Captains starter Casey Shane to give Bowling Green a 1-0 lead.

For Law, the homer was his third of year.

Unfortunately, the Hot Rods were unable to hold on to the lead. After a sacrifice fly by outfielder Connor Marabell tied the game up at one in the third, the Captains took a 3-1 lead in the seventh on a two-out, two-run double by Marabell against Hot Rods reliever Fernando Baez (L, 0-1).

In their attempt at a comeback, Hot Rods third basemen Michael Russell cut their deficit in half with a solo homer in the eighth inning against Captains reliever Jared Robinson (W, 2-1).

With the score still 3-2 in the bottom of the ninth, Bowling Green got a one-out double by outfielder Angel Moreno off of Captains closer Billy Strode (S, 5). After Strode struck out a batter to make it two outs, a meeting at the mound allowed Strode to unassumingly hand the ball to second basemen Angel Miguel. After the conclusion of the meeting and Strode stretching off the rubber, Miguel tagged Moreno as he took a small lead off second to end the game.

After the loss, the Hot Rods are winless (0-7) during July 4 games, and have lost each of the last four July 4 games by one-run.

Offensively, Bowling Green was paced by catcher Brett Sullivan who went 4-for-4 with three doubles. Sullivan tied a franchise-record, becoming the fifth player in team history with three doubles in a game. He is now hitting .558 (19-for-34) against Lake County pitching this year.

On the pitching side, the Hot Rods got a quality start from Taylor Hawkins, who earned a no-decision by giving up one run in six innings while striking out five batters.

Bowling Green will continue with a four-game series against the Lake County Captains at Bowling Green Ballpark on Tuesday They will send righty Jose Mujica to the mound.

First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM.
