Lake County Captains News Release

(Bowling Green, KY) - The Lake County Captains' four-game winning streak came to an end on Tuesday night at Bowling Green Ballpark. Though starter Matt Esparza pitched well over five innings, the Captains' offense could not muster a run in a 3-0 loss to the Bowling Green Hot Rods.

The Hot Rods opened the scoring in the fourth inning. David Olmedo-Barrera worked his way aboard with one out, as he dropped a perfect bunt down the third base line. The runner stole second base and shortly thereafter took off for third. As Olmedo-Barrera raced toward third, Captains catcher Sicnarf Loopstok fired his throw high over third baseman Ordomar Valdez. Olmedo-Barrera scored the game's first run as the ball hopped down the left field line for a throwing error.

Peter Maris dealt the next two blows for Bowling Green. The left-hand-hitting second baseman homered down the right field line in the fifth against Esparza and went deep over the left-centerfield wall in the eighth against reliever Christian Meister.

The Captains managed only three hits against the Hot Rods all evening. Bowling Green starter Jose Mujica gave up just two hits over a career-high seven shutout innings to earn the win. Mujica (4-3) walked one man and struck out six.

Esparza (7-5) only allowed one earned run over five innings, but still took the loss. The right-hander surrendered one earned run and one unearned run on just three Hot Rods hits. Esparza walked one and struck out four.

Diego Castillo earned his seventh save for Bowling Green. Castillo pitched a pair of scoreless innings and struck out three. He only surrendered one hit, an infield single by Willi Castro in the ninth. Loopstok and Connor Marabell had Lake County's other two hits, all of which were singles.

Bobby Ison turned in the Captains' highlight of the game in the fourth inning. On his 23rd birthday, the left fielder tracked a blast off of the bat of Michael Russell all the way to the wall. Ison leaped up and grabbed the wall as it was about to clear the fence for a home run-robbing catch.

The Captains have split the first two games in Bowling Green and will face the Hot Rods again on Wednesday night. First pitch at Bowling Green Ballpark is scheduled for 7:35 PM ET.
