Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA - Having come in as a defensive replacement in the fifth inning, Logan Taylor wanted to make himself heard offensively, and in the bottom of the eighth inning in a 1-1 tie, he did so and then some. Leading off the inning against Burlington's Eric Karch, Taylor launched a firework over the left field fence for his fourth homer of the year making it a 2-1 LumberKings lead. Matt Walker struck out the side in order in the ninth for his second save, giving the LumberKings (10-2, 49-33) the win over Bees (5-7, 37-45) on the Fourth of July at Ashford University Field.

The Bees got to LumberKings starter Luiz Gohara early, as Angelo Amendolare led off the game with a single up the middle. With Jake Yacinich up, Gohara threw to first, but the ball went under Dalton Kelly's glove and into the right field bullpen, advancing Amendolare to second. Jared Foster then singled to right, and Gus Craig's throw in forced Amendolare to hold up at third. Ranyelmy Alberto then singled to center, scoring Amendolare, but Foster got caught in a rundown between second and third and was tagged out. Gohara then punched out Jared Walsh to end the inning.

Clinton tied the game back up in the fourth as Gus Craig led off the inning with a double into the right center field gap against Burlington starter Austin Robichaux. With one out and Ricky Eusebio up, Craig got aggressive and stole third. The move paid off as Eusebio hit a hot shot to third baseman Michael Pierson, who fumbled with the ball, and by the time he came up with it, his only play was to first, allowing Craig to score and tying the game at one.

The game almost took a turn for the worse in the fifth as Luiz Gohara lost command of the strike zone. After getting Webster Rivas to fly out to center on the first pitch of the inning, Gohara walked Michael Pierson on four pitches, and after a wild pitch advanced Pierson to second, Gohara then walked Angelo Amendolare. He came back and struck out Jake Yacinich for the third time, but then walked Jared Foster to load the bases. Manager Mitch Canham then went to Kyle Wilcox (3-4), who got Ranyelmy Alberto to fly out to center on the first pitch he saw to end the inning and strand the bases loaded.

Wilcox dominated in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings, allowing just two hits in the process. Keeping the Bees off the board left the door open in the bottom of eighth for Logan Taylor, who's leadoff rocket against Eric Karch (0-3) sailed over the wall in left field to break the 1-1 tie. For Taylor, it was his first home run at home and his third against Burlington. Matt Walker got Michael Hermosillo, Alexis Rivera, and Webster Rivas to all strike out swinging to end the game, giving the LumberKings their 14th one run victory.

The LumberKings look for their fourth straight win tomorrow as the host Burlington at 6:30 PM. Pablo Lopez (3-0, 1.95) goes for the LumberKings against the Bees Jose Rodriguez (4-4, 3.39).
