'Caps Score Nine in Second, Rally for 15-10 Win

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps scored nine runs in the second inning, fell behind then rallied in one of the most bizarre games of the season to beat the Great Lakes Loons 15-10 at Fifth Third Ballpark Tuesday night.

The second inning of Tuesday's contest became the highest-scoring frame of the season, as the Loons jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top half of the inning with a pair of run-scoring singles by Omar Estevez and Gage Green. The Whitecaps answered back in the bottom half with their biggest scoring outburst of the season, scoring nine runs to recapture the lead. The 'Caps took advantage of two Loons errors in the process, featuring a two-run single by Will Allen and Brett Pirtle's run-scoring double to take a 9-4 edge.

Amazingly, Great Lakes battled back to take the lead after scoring four runs in the third before Estevez launched a two-run homer to give the Loons a 10-9 lead after four innings. The score stayed the same until the seventh, when Derek Hill lined a two-run single into centerfield to help West Michigan reclaim a 11-10 lead. The Whitecaps added four insurance runs in the eighth highlighted by a two-run single by catcher Arvicent Perez, capping off a career-high five hit performance to extend their lead to 15-10.

The starting pitchers for each team were escorted quickly from the contest as Loons starter Michael Boyle gave up nine runs without making it past the second inning, while Beau Burrows allowed eight runs to be knocked out of the game in the third. Yordy Cabrera (1-0) made his 'Caps debut with three scoreless frames while striking out three to record his first win, while Alex Hermeling (1-3) allowed six runs in three innings in suffering his third loss of the season. The Whitecaps improve to 45-34, and an even 6-6 in the second half. Great Lakes falls to 5-8 in the second portion of 2016, and 34-49 this season. Perez finished 5-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and three RBI to pace the club to victory. Perez joins Allen as the two 'Caps players to post a five-hit game this season.
