Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - Midwest League All-Star Marcos Diplan fired five shutout innings as the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers posted a 6-2 win Tuesday over the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Wisconsin evened this four-game series at one win apiece with Tuesday's triumph.

Diplan took a no-hitter into the fourth inning and only allowed two hits and four walks in a shutout start. He collected three strikeouts, including back-to-back strikeouts to escape a bases-loaded jam that developed in the bottom of the fourth.

The Timber Rattlers (7-6, 41-42) notched an early 1-0 lead during the second inning. Mitch Ghelfi hit a leadoff double and moved to third base on a groundout. A wild pitch from Miles Nordgren allowed Ghelfi to score the game's first run.

Isan Diaz homered to open a fourth-inning rally for Wisconsin. Diaz cleared the yellow line atop the left-field wall for a solo home run and his ninth round-tripper of the season. Jake Gatewood followed with a double and came home on a Ghelfi single coupled with an error. Ghelfi later scored during a sacrifice double play off the bat of Juan Ortiz for a 4-0 Wisconsin lead.

Zander Wiel's two-run home run in the sixth helped the Kernels (6-7, 42-40) cut their deficit to 4-2. Luis Arraez led off the inning with a double before Wiel launched his fifth blast, hitting his homer over the Plumbers & Pipefitters Pavilion in left field.

Wisconsin added insurance runs in the final two frames for a 6-2 winning margin. Brandon Diaz doubled in the eighth and was sacrificed to third base before Max McDowell came up with an RBI single to bring in Diaz. During the ninth inning, Troy Stokes Jr. was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to allow Ghelfi to come home. Ghelfi went 3-for-4 with three runs scored Tuesday.

Diplan (6-2) received the victory after tossing five scoreless innings. Nordgren (3-5) took the loss despite a quality start, totaling five runs allowed- three earned - and a game-high six strikeouts over seven-plus innings pitched. It was also his sixth quality start over his past eight outings, but Cedar Rapids has only averaged three runs per game in that stretch.

Game three of this four-game series is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Wednesday with Kernels right-hander Eddie Del Rosario (0-2, 6.58 ERA) pitching against Timber Rattlers right-hander Devin Williams (4-2, 3.83 ERA). Catch the action with Morgan Hawk and Chris Kleinhans-Schulz on 1450 KMRY AM and 93.1 KMRY FM and online at www.kmryradio.com, www.kernels.com and MiLB.TV.

Gates open at 5:30 p.m. ahead of a 6:35 p.m. first pitch for the third game of this eight-game homestand. The Kernels also welcome the national Ed Randall Bat for the Cure program to Wednesday's contest.
