December 20, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Cleveland Monsters News Release
After heading to a shootout for the third straight game, the Lake Erie Monsters (13-11-0-3) topped the Rochester Americans (13-11-2-3) 1-0 Friday night at Blue Cross Arena in Rochester, New York. Sami Aittokallio earned his sixth win of the season in net after stopping 36 shots and four-of-five shooters in the shootout. Colin Smith and Mark Olver scored in the shootout for the Monsters, who meet Rochester again Saturday night at 7:00 PM.
Aittokallio's most active period was the first, in which he stopped all 16 shots he saw. After a scoreless overtime period, the game would head to a shootout. Colin Smith was the Monsters second shooter, and he tied the shootout portion at 1-1 when he improved to four-of-five on shootout attempts for the campaign. In the fifth round, Mark Olver converted for the shootout-winning goal before Sami Aittokallio denied Frederick Roy's bid to tie the shootout and prolong the game.
Aittokallio is 6-4-1 on the season for the Monsters after the 36-save shutout; his first shutout of the season. Nathan Lieuwen stopped 24 of 24 shots for Rochester and three-of-five shooters in the shootout; his record is 5-5-1 with the shootout loss.
The Monsters and Rochester meet Saturday night at 7:00 PM at Quicken Loans Arena; a game that airs live on AM 1220 WHKW on radio and on MY 43 THE BLOCK WUAB on television.
