Springfield Falcons News Release
Providence, Rhode Island - The Springfield Falcons (19-4-1-2) defeated the Providence Bruins in a shootout Friday night by the final score of 3-2, extending the team's point streak to six games.
After the Bruins took a 2-0 lead early in the second period behind goals from Justin Florek and Kevin Miller, the Falcons fought back to tie the score before the end of the middle frame. Andrew Joudrey cut the deficit in half at the 11:35 mark as he beat Providence netminder Malcolm Subban five-hole for his fourth goal of the season. Frederic St. Denis brought Springfield even with a power-play goal at 18:57, sneaking a wrist shot from the left-wing circle into the back of the net.
The game remained tied at 2-2 through the end of regulation and overtime, and shootout conversions from Joudrey and Sean Collins lifted Springfield to victory. Jared Knight notched the lone conversion in seven rounds for Providence.
In his first appearance since returning to the club from his recall with the Columbus Blue Jackets, Jeremy Smith earned his 12th victory of the season, making 20 saves on 22 shots and denying six of seven shootout attempts in net for Springfield. Subban stopped 24 of 26 shots through regulation and overtime and four of six shootout attempts in a losing effort, falling to 4-5-2 this season.
Both teams went 1-for-3 on the power play.
With the win, Springfield improved upon its AHL-best points percentage, bettering the rate to .788. The team has earned at least a point in its last six games and in 14 of its last 15.
The Falcons close out the current six-game road trip Saturday, December 21 at the XL Center versus the Hartford Wolf Pack. Springfield is 5-0-0-0 against Hartford this season. The team returns to the MassMutual Center Thursday, December 26 to host the Adirondack Phantoms at 7:00 p.m.
