Portland Pirates News Release

Manchester, NH - The Manchester Monarchs took a 3-1 lead in the VIP Cup Series, presented by VIP Parts & Service, with a 6-2 win over the Portland Pirates in their first game at the Verizon Wireless Center this season. Jordan Martinook and Keven Veilleux each scored for the Pirates.

The Monarchs took control early in the first period. Nick Shore got the scoring started at 4:36 of the first period, putting a second chance shot past Visentin on the power play. Shore then assisted on Brian O'Neill's goal at 10:55 of the first, which doubled Manchester's lead. O'Neill scored again with 2:39 left in the period, again assisted by Shore, before the Pirates were able to get one back, as Jordan Martinook was able to beat JF Berube to pull the Pirates within 2. Martinook's goal, his fifth of the season, was assisted by Brendan McMillan and Randy Jones. However, with less than 3 seconds left in the period and both teams skating 4 aside, Jordan Weal added on to the Monarchs lead to give Manchester the 4-1 advantage at the first intermission.

Manchester extended their lead in the second period. After Louis Domingue replaced Mark Visentin in net, Andy Andreoff greeted him with a goal just 2:28 into the second to extend Manchester's lead to 5-1. The Pirates applied pressure towards the end of the period, but still trailed after the second.

Manchester tallied their second power play tally of the game as Tanner Pearson scored with 18:18 left in regulation to extend the Monarchs lead. Keven Veilleux closed the gap for the Pirates, tipping home a Brandon Gormley shot on the power play at 9:02 of the period to make the score 6-2. Daine Todd also picked up an assist on Veilleux's goal. The Pirates got frustrated towards the end of the game with a couple of fights to close out regulation, but Manchester maintained their lead.

The Monarchs take the first regulation win in the VIP Cup series this season, as all three games previous games were decided in a shootout. Mark Visentin takes the loss for the Pirates after making 10 saves on 14 shots, while Louis Domingue made 17 saves on 19 shots in relief, his third relief appearance of the season.
