Crunch Defeated by Senators 5-2

Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Crunch were defeated by the Binghamton Senators 5-2 tonight at the War Memorial Arena.

Syracuse goaltender Kristers Gudlevskis stopped 31 of 35 shots in defeat, while Binghamton goaltender Nathan Lawson stopped 18 of 20 in victory.

The loss puts the Crunch at 12-11-1-3 on the season and 1-4-1-0 in the series with the Senators. Syracuse was able to convert on two of four man-advantages opportunities. The penalty kill unit allowed one goal on seven Binghamton power-play opportunities.

The Crunch took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission on the strength of two power-play tallies. Brett Connolly scored his third goal of the season to give the Crunch a 1-0 lead just 2:05 into the period. Matt Taormina took a shot off a pass from Cedric Paquette that deflected off Lawson's pads. Connolly scored on the rebound from the right side of the crease. Paquette increased the Crunch's lead with 2:39 remaining in the first. Paquette redirected a pass from Jon DiSalvatore past Lawson on the glove side. Connolly was credited with the secondary assist.

Binghamton went on to secure their first win since Nov. 27 by scoring five unanswered goals, two in the second period and three in the third. Fredrik Claesson scored early in the second when he beat Gudlevskis off a pass from Derek Grant at the 5:12 mark. Mike Hoffman scored the Senators' second tally with 47 seconds left in the period. Assists were credited to Stephane Da Costa and Chris Wideman.

Mark Stone scored the game-winning power-play goal at the 8:27 mark of the third period. Hoffman's shot was stopped by Gudlevskis, but Stone found the rebound. Wideman picked up the secondary assist. The Senators added to their tally when Jim O'Brien found the back of the net with a slap-shot from the right circle at the 18:19 mark after receiving the puck from Cole Schneider. Wideman earned his third assist of the game on the play. David Dziurzynski made the final score 5-2 in favor of Binghamton when he scored on an empty net with 13 seconds left in the period.

The Crunch travel to face the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins tomorrow night.
