Cleveland Monsters News Release
CLEVELAND - The AHL's Cleveland Monsters were defeated by the Binghamton Devils in overtime on Sunday at The Q by a final score of 4-3. With the loss, the Monsters are now 22-21-5-1 overall this season and with 50 points, find themselves in seventh place in the AHL's North Division standings.
Binghamton grabbed a 1-0 lead at 3:51 of the opening period by virtue of an even-strength Blake Speers tally before Cleveland's Vitaly Abramov tied the game at one with a five-on-five finish at 6:42 set up by Nikita Korostelev and Ryan MacInnis.
From there, the Devils struck for back-to-back power-play goals from Ryan Schmelzer at 19:00 of the first and Brandon Gignac at 5:11 of the second period to grab a 3-1 lead before Korostelev posted an even-strength goal at 19:35 of the middle stanza to draw Cleveland within one at 3-2 with Justin Scott and Doyle Somerby collecting assists on the play.
In the third, Abramov pounded home another even-strength tally, his second of the game, at 14:29 thanks to helpers from Tommy Cross and Korostelev to level the score at three, but in a three-on-three overtime period, Binghamton's Marian Studenic blasted home the game's decisive score at 3:51 of the extra session to deliver the Devils at 4-3 victory.
Monsters goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks stopped four of the seven shots he faced in the first 25:01 of the game before he was relieved by Jean-Francois Berube who denied 16 of the 17 shots he encountered the rest of the way to fall to 14-15-4 this season. On the other side, Binghamton's Cam Johnson improved to 7-9-1 this year by virtue of a 41-save performance.
Next up for the Monsters, it's a Tuesday home clash vs. the Rochester Americans with full coverage, live from The Q, underway at 7:00 pm on Alt 99.1, AHLTV and the Monsters Hockey Network.
