LAST WEEK ‚¬â„¢S HIGHLIGHTS

At Worcester (2/4): Center Steven Zalewski and right wing Jonathan Cheechoo scored in the shootout, as the Worcester Sharks collected a 4-3 shootout victory over the Manchester Monarchs at the DCU Center Friday evening. Left wing Dwight King, defenseman Viatcheslav Voynov and right wing John Zeiler potted goal for the Monarchs. Right wing Brandon Kozun also added a shootout goal for the Monarchs. Center Andrew Desjardins, forward Tommy Wingels and center Steven Zalewski scored in regulation for the Sharks, with Zalewski and Cheechoo adding goals in the shootout to clinch the victory. Manchester goaltender Martin Jones (17-5-1) collected only his first shootout loss of the season, stopping 33-of-36 shots in regulation and 3-of-5 shots on goal in the shootout. Worcester netminder Alex Stalock (19-17-4) skated in the first 56 minutes of the contest, but yielded to goaltender Carter Hutton (4-3-2) following an injury. Stalock halted 28-of-31 shots on goal in regulation, while Hutton stopped all three shots on goal he faced in regulation and in overtime. Hutton denied 4-of-5 Monarchs shooters in the shootout. Manchester went 2-for-3 on the power play. Worcester went 1-for-2 with the man advantage.

At Albany (2/5): Center Oscar Moller scored two goals in the contest and goaltender Martin Jones stopped all 26 shots on goal as the Manchester Monarchs blanked the Albany Devils by a 4-0 score Saturday night at the Times Union Center. Moller scored two goals for the Monarchs, with left wings Bud Holloway and Dwight King adding markers of their own in the winning effort. Jones (18-5-1) collected his 18th victory of the season, stopping all 26 shots on net in the contest. Albany goaltender Mike McKenna (8-13-0) drew his 13th defeat of the season, halting 18-of-22 shots on goal. Manchester went 2-for-6 on the power play. Albany went 0-for-3 with the man advantage.

MONARCHS NEWS & NOTES

The Manchester Monarchs (31-16-1-4, 67 points) hold onto sole possession of first place, leading the Atlantic Division with 67 points. The Portland Pirates (30-15-4-1, 65 points) trail the Monarchs by only two points for second place in the division with 65 points. The Worcester Sharks (24-18-2-6, 56 points) trail the Monarchs by 11 points, placing third in the seven team Atlantic Division. The Connecticut Whale (24-21-2-5, 55 points) are in fourth place in the division, trailing Manchester by 12 points. The Providence Bruins (23-23-3-1, 50 points) and the Springfield Falcons (23-23-1-3, 50 points) are tied for fifth place in the division with 50 points, while the Bridgeport Sound Tigers (19-25-3-3, 44 points) are in seventh place with 44 points.

Manchester ‚¬â„¢s power play is ranked 11th in the AHL as they have scored 47 goals on 243 opportunities for an 19.3% conversion rate. On the penalty kill, the Monarchs are ranked ninth in the league as they have given up 36 goals when they have been down a man. They have been shorthanded 234 times this season and have an 84.6% penalty kill rating.

Manchester ‚¬â„¢s home power play unit ranks fourth overall out of 30 AHL teams, scoring 30 goals with the man advantage in 127 opportunities for a 23.6% conversion rate.

Scoring his third goal in as many games Friday evening, defenseman Viatcheslav Voynov (12-25=37) holds sole possession of first place on the Monarchs with 37 points.

Voynov also leads American Hockey League defenseman with 37 points on the season and is tied for the lead among AHL blueliners with six power play goals to his credit.

Named to his second consecutive AHL All-Star game, Voynov participated in the 2011 Reese ‚¬â„¢s AHL All-Star Skills Competition, claiming victory in the Reebok Fastest Skater event with a time of 14.197 seconds. Voynov also appeared in the AHL All-Star Game at the 2011 AHL All-Star Classic presented by Capital BlueCross last Monday night at Giant Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Voynov assisted on one of the Eastern Conference ‚¬â„¢s goals on their way to the 11-8 victory.

Left wing Bud Holloway recorded an assist as well as his team-leading 16th goal of the season in Saturday ‚¬â„¢s 4-0 blanking of the Albany Devils. He has 36 points (16-20=36) in 51 games to place second on the Monarchs in points.

Holloway assisted on the game-winning goal and added a power play goal of his own as insurance in Saturday ‚¬â„¢s contest against Albany.

Center Oscar Moller (13-21=34) collected two goals against the Devils on Saturday, taking sole possession of third place on the Monarchs with 34 points.

Overall, Moller has four game-winning goals this season which ties him with center Justin Azevedo (12-16=28) and right wing Brandon Kozun (11-12=23) for eighth place in the league in game-winning goals.

Kozun is tied for third among rookies with four game-winning goals.

Azevedo is tied for seventh place on the Monarchs with 27 points this season.

Center Andrei Loktionov (8-23=31), recalled by the Los Angeles Kings on January 20, is fourth on the Monarchs in points with 31.

Loktionov leads the team in the plus/minus category with a plus-15.

Loktionov has three points (2-4=4) and two penalty minutes in 14 games with the Kings.

Left wing Dwight King scored a goal in both Friday ‚¬â„¢s 4-3 shootout loss to the Worcester Sharks and Saturday ‚¬â„¢s 4-0 win against the Devils, placing him fifth overall on the Monarchs with 30 points (14-16=30).

Center Marc-Andre Cliche is in sixth place on the team with 29 points (14-15=29) on the season.

Cliche is tied for second place on the Monarchs in goals with King (14).

Cliche, with 14 goals, has already eclipsed his previous career-highs of 11 goals, set in both the 2007-08 and the 2009-10 Monarchs seasons.

Center Corey Elkins (13-15=28) is tied with Azevedo for seventh place on the Monarchs in points with 28.

Elkins is tied for third place on the Monarchs with Moller and left wing David Meckler (13-10=23) in goals with 13 tallies each.

Meckler is tied with Kozun for ninth place on the Monarchs with 23 points apiece.

Defenseman Patrick Mullen led all Monarchs players this weekend with three points in two games (0-3=3), giving him 13 points (1-12=13) on the season.

Left wing Richard Clune ‚¬â„¢s 170 penalty minutes places him fifth overall in the league in the same category.

Right wing Justin Johnson ‚¬â„¢s 120 penalty minutes place him 20th overall in the AHL.

Johnson has recorded penalty minutes in each of his last seven games played, racking up 32 penalty minutes over that span beginning on December 19 against the Sharks.

Goaltender Jeff Zatkoff has a record of 12-11-3 with a 3.09 goals-against-average and a .901 save percentage in 28 games this season.

Netminder Martin Jones has played in 27 games with the Monarchs and has collected a record of 18-5-1 with a 2.11 goals-against-average and a .932 save percentage.

Alongside Voynov, Jones was a Monarchs representative at the 2011 AHL All-Star Classic presented by Capital BlueCross. Jones participated in the 2011 Reese ‚¬â„¢s AHL All-Star Skills Competition, helping the Eastern Conference to a 19-7 Skills Competition victory.

Jones held opposing shooters scoreless in the Reese ‚¬â„¢s Pass and Score event, making three saves. Jones only allowed 1-of-6 shooters to score during the Panasonic Breakaway Relay, as Milwaukee left wing Linus Klasen scored on Jones following two spins between the hashmarks.

Jones also played in the first 30-plus minutes of the contest, making 15 saves on 19 shots on goal, combining with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins netminder John Curry to lead the Eastern Conference All-Stars to an 11-8 victory over their counterparts from the Western Conference.
