The Sharks chomped four out of a possible four points last week in two games highlighted by a 2-0 victory over the Bruins on Saturday in front of 6,061 fans at the DCU Center behind Carter Hutton's 1st professional shutout. Worcester came from behind and defeated the first place Monarchs in Worcester on Friday by the score of 4-3. The Sharks player of the week nominee was rookie goaltender Carter Hutton; posting his first professional shutout (20 saves) along with a #1 star nod on Saturday; and making three saves and going 4-for-5 in the shootout as he appeared in relief of an injured Alex Stalock on Friday. The Sharks enter the week riding a season high four game winning streak and concluded their season long six game home stand 4-1-0-1. Worcester begins a season high five game road swing in Springfield on Friday.

2.4.11 - Worcester 4 - Manchester 3 - SOW - DCU Center Worcester pulled out the shootout victory over the first place Manchester Monarchs by the score of 4-3 Friday night at the DCU Center for their third straight victory on the season long six game home stand to remain in 3rd place in the Atlantic Division. The line of Steven Zalewski, Tommy Wingels, and Brandon Mashinter played a strong game as they combined for six points to help overcome a third period injury to goalie Alex Stalock for the Sharks. Netminder Carter Hutton made three saves in relief and stood tall in the shootout for Worcester. Coach Roy Sommer broke his nose in the first period after an errant puck caught him behind the bench (WATCH HERE) in a wild game in Worcester on Friday night.
2.5.11 - Worcester 2 - Providence 0 - W - DCU Center Carter Hutton made 20 saves for his first professional shutout as the Sharks defeated the Providence Bruins by the score of 2-0 on Saturday evening in front of 6,061 fans at the DCU Center. Joe Loprieno scored his second goal of the season and Brandon Mashinter added an empty netter as the Sharks won their season high 4th straight game. With the win, the Sharks concluded their season long six game home stand 4-1-0-1.
Sharks in the Atlantic: The Sharks are swimming in 3rd place with 56 points (24-18-2-6) in the Atlantic Division through 50 games, which is 11 points behind the first place Manchester Monarchs (52gp), 9 points behind the 2nd place Portland Pirates (50gp), and one point ahead of the 4th place CT Whale (52gp). The Bruins (50gp) and Falcons (50gp) are right in the mix of things with 50 points followed by the 7th place Sound Tigers with 44 points to round out a very choppy Atlantic Division.
400 WINS + and 1000 + games...
400 WINS!....With the 4-1 victory vs. Springfield on November 1, 2009, head coach Roy Sommer became just the 4th coach in AHL history to reach the 400 win plateau.
1000 GAMES... With the 3-1 victory at Springfield on January 14, 2011, head coach Roy Sommer became just the 4th coach in AHL history to reach the 1,000 games plateau.

Worcester Sharks Head Coach Roy Sommer, who plays a major role in developing players for the San Jose Sharks, is currently the longest-tenured coach (13th season) in the American Hockey League. His current regular season record is now: 466-420 -48 -42-34. (W-L-T-OTL-SOL)
In Coach Sommer's first AHL victory.... The Kentucky Thoroughblades defeated the Albany River Rats 6-4 at the Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky on October 17th 1998. Coincidentally, Assistant Coach David Cunniff recorded an assist as a member of the River Rats in the hockey game.
Assistant Coach David Cunniff has joined Coach Sommer in 312 of the 466 victories (67%)... Coach Cunniff filled in for Roy in a 3-2SOW in Springfield on December 29, 2010 as coach Sommer was in California attending his father's funeral.
Shark Bites:
Gone but not forgotten... Before the Sharks on January 10th, there was a moment of silence for former Sharks and Falcons player Tom Cavanagh who passed away on January 6th in Providence, RI. Tom Cavanagh played for coach Sommer in Cleveland, and then came to Worcester when the franchise relocated for the 2006-07 season. He played for the Sharks through the end of the 2008-09 season and finished his Worcester career with point totals of 46-92-138. He remains the team's all-time leader in points and assists. A graduate of Toll Gate High in Warwick, R.I., and then Harvard University, Cavanagh eventually went on and played for the San Jose Sharks. Our thoughts and prayers to the entire Cavanagh family.
Captains for the 2010-11 season: Captain Jay Leach (1st year), Assistant Captains on the road: Jonathan Cheechoo (1st year) and Nick Petrecki (1st year). Assistant Captains at home: Andrew Desjardins (1st year) and Sean Sullivan (1st year)... Dan DaSilva, Cory Quirk, Joe Loprieno, and Frazer McLaren have also worn the assistant captain "A".
From east to west..... The Sharks have had 10 different players (17 call-ups) receive at least one call up this season to San Jose... Currently; Logan Couture, Jason Demers, Derek Joslin, Joe Pavelski, Devin Setoguchi, Marc-Edourd Vlasic, and Doug Murray are all former Worcester Sharks that are currently playing with the San Jose Sharks.
Home openers... the Sharks are 2-1-1-1 in five home openers at the DCU Center, including a 4-3 overtime loss to the Bruins on Saturday. Worcester was the last team in the AHL to host their home opener, and October 23rd was the Sharks latest home opener on record. The Sharks lost in a shootout 5-4 to Portland in 2006, defeated Portland 3-2 in 2007, defeated the Bruins in overtime 3-2 in 2008, and lost to Lowell 7-5 in 2009.
Score first... the Sharks have scored FIRST 23 times in 50 games this season (19-3-0-1) after scoring first in 42-of-80 games last season (34-6-0-2).... T.J. reaches 100.... Sharks forward T.J. Trevelyan skated in his 100th game for the Sharks on January 10th and scored his 35th goal as a Shark in the 3-2 shootout loss to Springfield.
Z reaches 200 games... Sharks forward Steve Zalewski became just the 5th player in Sharks history to hit the 200gp plateau in the Sharks 3-1 win in Springfield on Friday, January 14, 2011. "Z" has skated in 210 games for Worcester, surpassing Riley Armstrong for 2nd all-time and is currently the Sharks iron man with 53 games played in a row. The late Tom Cavanagh holds the Sharks record with 216gp.
Sharks feast on Falcons... Worcester has a point in 14 straight games against the Springfield Falcons (12-0-2) and 20-2-2 in the last 24 games vs. the Falcons. Alex Stalock is 11-0-1 in 12 appearances against the Falcons.
Braun in NHL... Justin Braun made his NHL debut in Vancouver on Nov 26... Justin played 16:56 in the loss to the Canucks... Braun recorded two assists in his 2nd NHL game in a 4-3W in Edmonton on Nov 24 and was the #3 star with a +2 rating in 22:48 of action.... Braun has played in 15 games with San Jose (1-8-9) this season. His first NHL goal came in a 4-0 win in Ottawa against Pascal LeClaire on December 2. Justin Braun represented the Sharks at the 2011 AHL All-Star Classic in Hershey and fired a 95.6mph shot in the hardest shot competition.
Sullivan Scores... Sharks defenseman Sean Sullivan already has 10 goals (2 GWG) this season from the Sharks blue line, good for 3rd in the AHL. The 26-year-old from Boston, MA had 12 goals and 49 points in San Antonio last season. Sean ranks 4th on the Sharks with 22 points this season. Defense Scoring... Sharks defensemen have scored 31 of the Sharks 132 goals this season, good for 23.4% of the Sharks goals scored this season.
Irwin scoring... Sharks rookie defenseman Matt Irwin has 9 goals and 11 assists from the Sharks blue line this season. The rookie from UMASS-Amherst has 8 goals in his last 31 games for the Sharks.
Give me Moore... #8 has played 165 games in a Worcester Sharks jersey (11th all-time) and has compiled 46 points (10-36-45) and 251 penalty minutes. His +31 is 4th best in Sharks history. He recorded his first professional two goal game on November 14 vs. Norfolk and was the #1 star. Moore scored his first NHL goal in his 2nd NHL game in a 4-3OTL in Colorado on November 17th. Mike scored at 9:14 of the 2nd period on a slap shot assisted by Dany Heatley on Peter Budaj to give the Sharks a 3-1 lead. MM has also been the Sharks Man of the Year for the previous two seasons for his continued work in the Worcester community.
Who's your BF ... Sharks 2nd year forward Benn Ferriero started his sophomore campaign on FIRE with NINE goals through 10 games to lead the Worcester Sharks offensively. Benn has played 29 games with the San Jose Sharks and has five goals, four assists and +7.
Sheriff back in town... Frazer McLaren returned to Worcester on Nov 20 after beginning the season with the San Jose Sharks. Frazer has played in 142 games in a Worcester Sharks sweater accumulating 25 points (12-14-26) and 365 penalty minutes. McLaren ranks 3rd all time in penalty minutes by a Worcester Sharks player (Brennan Evans 381, and Brad Staubitz 462). The Sherriff missed 21 games due to a lower body injury before returning to the lineup on January 11 vs. Albany.

24... The Sharks tied a franchise record with 24 shots in the first period vs. the Sound Tigers on January 28. Worcester fired a season high 48 shots in the 3-2 victory.
47... Carter Hutton made 47 saves in his Sharks debut on Saturday, October 16th in Norfolk.
Nice Start... Carter Hutton made his first start of the season on Sunday, October 31st in Providence and made 37 saves to pick up the victory in a 6-1 win over the Bruins.
San Jose to Worcester... Sharks rookie netminder picked up his first professional shutout vs. the Bruins on February 5. (20 saves). Earlier in the day in Boston, he served as the backup goaltender for the San Jose Sharks in their 2-0 victory in Boston.
Déjàvu... the Sharks franchise picked up identical 2-0 victories over the Bruins franchise on February 5th. In the afternoon, San Jose shutout Boston 2-0 behind a goal by Logan Couture, an empty netter by Devin Setoguchi, and 26 saves by Antti Niemi. At night, Worcester defeated Providence 2-0 in Worcester behind a goal by Joe Loprieno, an empty netter by Brandon Mashinter, and 20 saves by Carter Hutton.

Mr. Dependable.... Andrew Desjardins had dressed in 188 straight games for Worcester breaking the record held by Derek Joslin (114 games).... Desjardins had the 2nd longest streak in the AHL (Nick Dodge in Charlotte) before his first NHL recall on January 2, 2011.
Monster Mash... Sharks power forward Brandon Mashinter received his first NHL recall on December 29, 2010. Mash made his NHL debut on December 29th in Minnesota (13 shifts and 7:17 of ice) in the Sharks 5-3 loss. Brandon has played 10 games in San Jose this season with no points and two fighting majors during his first NHL recall. Mash is currently back with Worcester.
