Saturday Puck Drop

Heart transplant survivor and American Heart Association volunteer Amanda Lawton drops the opening face-off at Saturday's game against the Connecticut Whale.

Pirates captain Matt Ellis (left) and Kris Newbury of the Connecticut Whale take part in the face-off.

Two years ago, when Lawton, a new mother, was only 26 years old she began to experience chest pain. She thought this was just from the anxiety of being a mom of a 5-day-old newborn. She was soon aware that the pain was serious and called 911. When the paramedics first arrived, they could not find anything wrong. Just before arriving at the hospital, however, an EKG showed that she was suffering a heart attack. The medical staff identified a blockage in her coronary artery and performed an emergency bypass surgery. Her arteries disintegrated during the bypass and the surgeon approached Lawton's family with grim news, she had only a 20% chance of survival and was being placed on a heart transplant list. Five months later, she returned home from Boston from her transplant and was able to return to her husband and baby once again.

Lawton credits the research by the American Heart Association as key to saving her life!

Irving Oil Youth Hockey Clinic

Pirates forwards Derek Whitmore, Igor Gongalsky and Justin Bowers hosted more than 30 advanced squirt and older players in a free Youth Hockey Clinic, presented by Irving Oil, held February 3rd at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

The players worked on particular skills/drills and the session culminated in an autograph session with the players.
