Manitoba Moose News Release
Manitoba Moose players enjoyed a short break during the AHL All-Star Classic that took place in Hershey on Jan. 30 & 31. All players except Sergei Shirokov, who made his second trip to Hershey in less than a week for Manitoba's Eastern Conference road trip through Wilkes-Barre and Hershey. The Moose faced the AHL's best team on Feb. 4, then the defending Calder Cup Champions on Feb. 5 & 6.
Friday, February 4, 2011: Manitoba 3, Wilkes-Barre 2 The Moose visited the AHL's best team on Friday night and jumped out to an early lead on the Penguins with goals by defencemen Mark Flood and Sami Salo. Salo dressed in his first game for the Moose as the NHL veteran was assigned to Manitoba by the Vancouver Canucks on a conditioning stint. Salo added another goal on the power play that would stand as the game winner for the Moose. Eddie Lack was a stalwart in Manitoba's net stopping 40 of 42 shots.
Saturday, February 5, 2011: Manitoba 5, Hershey 4 (SO) Manitoba and Hershey continue to stoke a fire that was lit during the 2009 AHL Calder Cup Finals. Bears fans packed the Giant Center to capacity on Saturday and provided a playoff like atmosphere as Hershey jumped out to a commanding 4-1 lead during the second period. The Moose replied with two late period goals by Bill Sweatt and Mark Flood. Then Jordan Schroeder completed the comeback midway through the third period. The Moose forced a shootout where rookie d-man Kevin Connauton scored the only goal in the seventh round to clinch a 5-4 shootout win for the visiting Moose.
Sunday, February 6, 2011: Manitoba 1, Hershey 5 On a day sports fans look forward to all season, the Moose and Bears rematch took place just hours before the kickoff of Super Bowl XLV. Both teams showed the effects of a fierce game the night before producing few chances and fewer goals. The game was tied 1-1 heading into the third until the Bears blew the doors off with four goals in the span of 6:25.
Moose Notes
WHEN MEETING THE EAST: Manitoba spent their first two AHL seasons aligned in the Eastern Conference until the 2003-04 season. Since that time, the Moose have a favourable all-time record against teams from the East at 53-38-6-8. When visiting the right side of the map, the Moose are 27-21-3-2. The East was a bad place for the Moose in 2009-10 with a road record of 2-6-0-0 against Eastern Conference teams and a full season record of 4-10-1-1.
HERE TODAY, GONE TOMORROW: Defenceman Sami Salo is not here for a long time as the NHL veteran is currently assigned by the Canucks on a conditioning stint. So far it's been a pretty good time with two goals in his first two periods with the Moose. Salo scored twice in his debut on Friday against Wilkes-Barre including a power play goal on a signature slap shot. Salo, 36, has played 665 NHL games in his career. Friday was his first career AHL game.
GARTH ADDS GOALS TO GRIT: The fact forward Garth Murray went 18 games without registering a point and still played a key role for the Moose speaks volumes about the veteran's contributions away from the puck. He scored in his 18th game with the Moose on Jan. 23 and has added more offence to his game since then. Murray has three points (2g, 1a) in his past seven games while also dropping the gloves twice in that stretch.
Upcoming Opponents
@ Penguins - Feb. 8 - 6:05 p.m. Vs. Rampage - Feb. 11 & 12 - 7:30 p.m.
The Moose play their final Eastern Conference road game of the season tomorrow when Manitoba visits the AHL's best team in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Then they'll fly home preparing to host the San Antonio Rampage on Feb. 11 & 12. Saturday night at MTS Centre is Mike Keane Tribute Night as the Moose will recognize the Winnipegger's career hockey achievements and raise Keane's iconic number 12 to the rafters.
Player of the Week Nominee
