Manchester Monarchs News Release
LAST WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS
At Worcester (12/29): The Manchester Monarchs treaded water as they fell to the Worcester Sharks, 5-2, at the DCU Center on Tuesday night. Defenseman Patrick Mullen and center Juraj Mikus lit the lamp for the Monarchs. The Sharks answered back with tallies by center Steven Zalewski (2), center Benn Ferriero, left wing John McCarthy and left wing Dennis McCauley. Monarchs goaltender Jonathan Bernier (16-9-2) took his ninth loss of the season stopping 35-of-39 shots. Sharks netminder Alex Stalock (17-8-1) earned his 17th win of the season with 15 saves. Manchester was 2-for-4 on the power play. Worcester was 1-for-2 with the man advantage.
Vs. Lowell (12/31): The Manchester Monarchs fell to the Lowell Devils, 5-2, at the Verizon Wireless Arena in their annual New Year's Eve game on Thursday night. Center Corey Elkins and left wing David Meckler tallied for the Monarchs. Lowell picked up goals from right wing Patrick Davis, center Tim Sestito, defenseman Tyler Eckford, left wing Alexander Vasyunov and right wing Nathan Perkovich. Monarchs goaltender Jeff Zatkoff (7-3-0) took his third loss of the season stopping 2-of-5 shots before being replaced in net by goaltender Jonathan Bernier (16-9-2) who made 26 saves in the final two periods of the game. Devils netminder Jeff Frazee (8-6-0) earned his eighth win of the season stopping 30-of-32 shots. Manchester was 0-for-3 on the power play. Lowell capitalized on 2-of-9 power play chances.
Vs. Portland (1/2): The Manchester Monarchs battled back but fell short in a 4-3 shootout loss to the Portland Pirates at the Verizon Wireless Arena in their first game of the New Year Saturday night. Center Corey Elkins, center Marc-Andre Cliche and right wing Kevin Westgarth found the back of the net for the Monarchs in regulation. Defenseman Patrick Mullen was the lone Monarchs player to score in the shootout. The Pirates picked up goals in regulation from left wing Nathan Gerbe (2) and right wing Mark Mancari. Center Marc-Andre Gragnani and Mancari scored in the shootout for Portland. Monarchs goaltender Jonathan Bernier (16-9-3) took his third shootout loss of the season stopping 22-of-25 shots in regulation and overtime and 8-of-10 snipers in the shootout. Pirates netminder Jonathan Enroth (11-11-1) earned the win with 23 saves in regulation and overtime followed by nine saves in the 10 round shootout. Manchester went 2-for-5 on the power play. Portland was 1-of-4 with the man advantage.
NEWS & NOTES
The Manchester Monarchs (23-11-1-3) remain in first place in the Atlantic Division with 50 points in 38 games this season. They are ranked third in the AHL behind the Hershey Bears (27-8-0-2) who have 56 points in 37 games and the Hamilton Bulldogs (23-9-2-3) who have 51 points in 37 games.
On New Year's Eve, the Monarchs have a 4-3-2-0 record with all nine games being played at the Verizon Wireless Arena.

The Monarchs are 14-4-0-2 at the Verizon Wireless Arena this season.
The Monarchs penalty kill is ranked third in the AHL. They have given up 19 goals in 155 attempts when their opponent has had the man advantage.
Their power play is ranked fifth in the league with 29 goals on 148 opportunities with the man advantage.
Manchester has been outshot by their opponent in 29-of-38 games thus far this season.
The Monarchs are 13-0-0-0 when scoring the first goal on home ice.
Manchester is also undefeated on home ice when playing on Fridays this season with a record of 6-0-0-0.
Center Corey Elkins (10-14$) leads Manchester with 24 points.
Center Gabe Gauthier (5-16=21) leads the Monarchs with 16 assists.
Left wing Bud Holloway (10-9=19) and Elkins lead the team with 10 goals each.
Center Oscar Moller (9-10=19), who is currently on recall to the Los Angeles Kings, and Holloway are tied for third in the AHL with four game-winning goals.
Defenseman Viatcheslav Voynov (6-13=19) leads Monarchs blueliners with 19 points which is ranked fifth overall on the Monarchs squad.
Voynov was named to the 2010 Time Warner Cable AHL All-Star Classic's PlanetUSA team. The game will be held in Portland, Maine at the Cumberland County Civic Center on January 18-19.
Right wing Scott Parse (3-10=13) leads the team in the plus/minus category with a plus-11 in only 10 games this season. He is currently on recall with the Kings.
Left wing David Meckler (8-5=13) has recorded 11 points (7-4=11) in his last 10 games.
Goaltender Jonathan Bernier has a record of 16-9-3 in 29 games of the season. His 16 wins are tied for third in the AHL.
Bernier was named the starting goaltender for Team Canada at the Time Warner Cable AHL All-Star Classic in Portland.
Bernier's four shutouts are also tied for second in the AHL.
Bernier is ranked fourth in the league with a 2.02 goals-against-average and is ranked second with a.940 save percentage.
Bernier made seven consecutive starts in net for the Monarchs from December 6-26 and is tied for third all-time with netminder Jason LaBarbera for 40 wins in a Manchester uniform.
Netminder Jeff Zatkoff has played in 11 games for the Monarchs this season, recording a 7-3-0 record, a 2.17 goals-against-average, a.933 save percentage and two shutouts.
