Hershey Takes 10 Straight Wins To Winnipeg Friday

January 4, 2010 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Hershey Bears News Release

The HERSHEY BEARS Hockey Club will look to extend a 10-game winning streak this week, traveling to Winnipeg to take on the Manitoba Moose. The two- game series will take place this Friday and Saturday at MTS Centre. The games mark the first time since the 2009 Calder Cup Finals that HERSHEY has faced Manitoba. The BEARS won the 2009 Calder Cup in Winnipeg back in June.

The road games north of the border this week are the beginning of a two-game road trip for Mark French and company. HERSHEY will travel to Norfolk and Albany next week to round out the trek. Tickets for both games are on sale now at the Giant Center box office or by calling (717) 534-3911.

Top of the Charts: Center Keith Aucoin leads the American Hockey League in goals heading into the first full week of 2010. Aucoin scored two goals Sunday in a 4-1 win over Adirondack to overtake Chicago's Brett Sterling for the number one goal scorer in the AHL. Aucoin, whose career high in goals is 27, has 19 goals already this season heading into weekend action in Winnipeg.

Varlamov starts, wins Sunday: Goaltender Semyon Varlamov, who won 19 games for HERSHEY last season, made his first start of the season for the BEARS Sunday against the Phantoms. Varlamov was assigned by Washington last week after posting a 12-1-2 record for the Capitals this season. He had been sidelined due to injury since last month.

Practice schedule: The BEARS will practice Tuesday and Wednesday at Giant Center at 10:00 a.m., with no media availability locally the rest of the week due to the team's trip to Manitoba.

Winning streak, part two: It was just last season under then head coach Bob Woods that HERSHEY authored a franchise record 11-game winning streak. Now, under head coach Mark French, the BEARS have won 10 straight heading into this weekend's series in Winnipeg against Manitoba. The BEARS also have a 15-point lead in the East Division standings, a plateau never reached during last season's run to a Calder Cup championship.

Washington update: After two straight losses in California last week in San Jose and Los Angeles, the Capitals return home Tuesday night to face Carey Price and the Montreal Canadiens at Verizon Center. Ottawa visits Thursday night in D.C. before a road trip to Atlanta Saturday night at Philips Arena.
