NEWS AND NOTES

Coaching Change...On Saturday, Rivermen head coach Davis Payne was hired as the interim head coach of the St. Louis Blues after Andy Murray was relieved of his duties. Payne made his NHL coaching debut later that day and dropped a 6-3 decision to the Chicago Blackhawks. The 39-year-old became the seventh AHL head coach to be named an NHL head coach since Nov. 22, 2007. Overall, 22 of the 30 head coaches in the NHL previously coached in the AHL.

What a week... The Rivermen completed their busiest week of the season with a coaching change before their final game. They earned a point in a shootout loss to Chicago in Rick Wamsley's head coaching debut. Peoria was 1-2-0-1 this week after playing four games in five nights in four different cities.

Welcome Wamsley...Payne's successor took over on Saturday as well, as Rick Wamsley was behind the bench in Peoria's 3-2 shootout loss in Chicago that night. Wamsley had previously served as the Blues' assistant/goaltending coach since 2006. Before arriving in St. Louis, he was working for the Columbus Blue Jackets organization where he served as a goaltending coach and pro scout since 1999. Prior to joining the Blue Jackets, Wamsley spent six seasons as a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs organization.

December to Remember...The Rivermen finished the month of December with nine wins and 18 points in 13 games. They collected 10 wins and 23 points in October and November combined (22 games).

Rebounding on the road...The Rivermen are 5-2-0-1 in their last eight road games after starting the year 3-6-0-1.

Power Surge...Peoria's power play was 6-for-21 (28.6%) this week and is now second in the league at 20.5 percent overall and first on the road at 22.6 percent.
