News & Notes
Right wing Tom Kostopoulos extended his season-best goal streak to four games with a goal against the Springfield Falcons on Sunday afternoon. The Monarchs beat the Falcons, 6-1, at the Verizon Wireless Arena.
Kostopoulos, originally selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the seventh-round (104th overall) in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft and signed by the Monarchs to a one-year contract on July 9, 2004, has five goals during the streak, the longest current goalscoring binge in the American Hockey League.
Kostopoulos, who shares the league lead in game-winning goals, collected his third game-winner of the season in the Monarchs 5-0 win over the Hershey Bears on Saturday night at the Verizon Wireless Arena. The 6-foot, 205-pound native of Mississauga, Ontario, led the Monarchs with two goals in the game.
Kostopoulos also scored a goal for the Monarchs in their 2-0 win over the Falcons at the Springfield Civic Center on Friday night.
For the week, Kostopoulos registered four goals on just six shots and finished with a plus-5 rating.
The 25-year-old Kostopoulos ranks first in the AHL with a shooting percentage of .438 (7 goals on 16 shots). He also ranks second in the league behind teammate and defenseman Joe Rullier (plus-14) with a plus-13 rating.
The Monarchs have scored the first goal in all 12 games they've skated in this season.
Through 12 games, the Monarchs have only trailed their opponents on the scoreboard for a total of 27 minutes and 58 seconds.
The Monarchs set two new team records in Sunday's win over the Falcons. The win was the Monarchs sixth straight on home ice, surpassing a Monarchs record of five straight home wins set last year and equaled on Saturday night with the Monarchs win over the Bears.
The Monarchs team record streak of 180 minutes and 58 seconds without allowing a goal ended when Springfield defenseman Andreas Holmqvist scored with only 1:52 remaining in Sunday's contest. The shutout streak, which started with the Monarchs 5-2 win over the Albany River Rats on November 6, included four games and two goaltenders, Mathieu Garon and Adam Hauser.
Garon, who came within 1:52 of pitching consecutive shutouts for the second time this season, improved his record to 7-1-0 with his 21-save win over the Falcons on Sunday.
Garon, selected in the second-round (44th overall) by the Montreal Canadiens in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft and acquired by the Los Angeles Kings from the Canadiens for Radek Bonk and Cristobal Huet on June 26, 2004, has 15 career AHL shutouts, including a league-leading three shutouts this season. Garon's high for AHL shutouts in a season is four, set while skating with the Hamilton Bulldogs during the 2002-03 season.
The 26-year-old Garon, a native of Chandler, Quebec, has a record of 16-1-2 in his last 19 AHL appearances. Garon's career record in the AHL includes 90 wins, 81 losses and 20 ties.
Garon's save-percentage of .949 ranks second in the AHL. Only the .951 save-percentage of teammate Adam Hauser ranks higher.
Hauser's 1.25 goals -against-average also ranks No. 1 in the league.
Hauser improved his record to 4-0-0 on the season with his 23 saves in the Monarchs win over the Bears on Saturday night.
Hauser, who has only played on Saturdays this season, has two shutouts in four appearances.
Hauser earned his ninth career shutout as a Monarch on Saturday night against the Bears. The Monarchs team record for career shutouts is 10, set by goalie Travis Scott from 2001-03.
Center Michael Cammalleri stretched his scoring streak to eight games on Sunday afternoon with one goal and one assist against the Falcons. Cammalleri, selected by the Kings in the second-round (49th overall) in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, has five goals and 14 points (5-9=14) during the streak.
Center Yanick Lehoux became just the fifth Monarchs player to collect 40 or more goals in his career on Saturday night against the Bears. Lehoux, selected by the Kings in the third-round (86th overall) in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, trails only right wing Pavel Rosa (67), left wing Eric Healey (66), center Steve Kelly (50) and left wing Derek Bekar (46) on the Monarchs all-time goals -scored list.
Lehoux added to his goal total and eclipsed a milestone with two more tallies against the Falcons on Sunday afternoon.
Lehoux's first goal gave him 100 points in his AHL career. The 22-year-old Lehoux has 42 goals and 101 points (42- 59=101) in 156 career games with the Monarchs over the last three seasons.
Lehoux ranks first in the league in scoring with 22 points (12-10=22) in 12 games. Cammalleri ranks second in league scoring with 21 points (8-13=21) in 12 games.
Lehoux's 12 goals rank second only to Manitoba Moose forward Jason King, who has 13 goals in 16 games. Cammalleri's 13 assists rank second only to Moose forward Peter Sarno, who has 16 assists in 16 games.
