MOOSE NOTES
First time for everything: Wednesday's opener at the MTS Centre against the St. John's Maple Leafs actually marks the third time the Moose will play their first game in a new home rink. On October 7, 1994 the Minnesota Moose opened at the St. Paul Civic Center with a 2-1 defeat to the Milwaukee Admirals. On October 11, 1996 the Manitoba Moose opened at the Winnipeg Arena with a 1- 0 loss against the Las Vegas Thunder.
Powerplay rolls on: Manitoba's powerplay has fueled the fire that is the team's fast start.
In 16 games this season, only four times has the team failed to produce a goal with the man advantage. Since October 29, the Moose have been especially efficient with 11 of their 21 total goals in that time frame coming on the powerplay. They are 11-for-42 over those eight games.
League Leaders: For the first time this season, a Moose player has slipped out of the league's overall scoring lead as Peter Sarno's 21 points places him in a tie for second with Mike Cammalleri of the Manchester Monarchs.
The new league leader is Manchester's Yanick Lehoux. Jason King remains the league leader in goals scored with 13, one ahead of Lehoux. King is tied with Providence's Andy Hilbert with five powerplay goals and is alone in first with 63 shots on goal. Lee Goren is in a four-way tie atop the league with three game-winning goals.
Third best start: With 22 points after 16 games, the Moose are off to the third-best start in their 11-year franchise history. In 1998- 99 the Moose had 23 points (10-3-3) after 16 games and in 2000-01, they had 24 points through 16 games played.
Road Warriors: With 19 points gained on the road so far this season, the Moose are far and away the league's road record leaders. The closest teams are Houston and Edmonton, who have each picked up 12 points outside their respective home buildings. Not including the Moose, only four teams in the league have 19 or more points overall - home and road records combined.
Milestones: Jimmy Roy played in his 500th professional game last night, all with the Manitoba Moose. In 500 games, Roy has scored 84 goals and added 98 assists for 182 points and 1144 penalty minutes. Another milestone was reached as Lee Goren's assist on Jeff Heerema's empty netter was the 200th point of his AHL career. In 269 career games played at the AHL level, Goren has 92 goals and 108 assists.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK NOMINEE
Wade Flaherty
2 GP, 2 Wins, 1.50 GAA, 0.968 SPct.
The Player of the Week nominee for the Manitoba Moose is goaltender Wade Flaherty. Flaherty made 25 stops on Friday in a 4-2 win over Cincinnati to snap a twogame winless drought for the Moose and then on Saturday he stole the show, stopping 36 of 37 shots in a 2-1 Moose win over the Ducks. Over the two games, Flaherty compiled two wins, a 1.50 goals-against average and 0.968 save percentage. So far this season, Flaherty ranks tenth in the league with a 2.06 GAA and is tied for eighth with six wins. He is also tied for eighth in the league with a 0.934 SPct.
