11/9/04 Edmonton 2 - Cleveland 0... The Barons and Road Runners traveled to San Jose to play at the HP Pavilion, the home of the Barons parent club, the Sharks. Cleveland was shutout for the first time this season, as Edmonton's Alex Auld saved 33 shots on the night. Dimitri Patzold performed well, stopping 23 shots, but lost just his second game of the season.
11/11/04 Cleveland 3 - Manitoba 2 OT/SO... The Barons received a great performance from goaltender Nolan Schaefer, as he led the Barons to their first victory in a shootout in franchise history. With the win, the Barons are now 1-1 in shootouts. The Barons evened the season series as Ryane Clowe scored on the fifth and final shot in the shootout. At the time, the shootout score was tied a 1 with Patrick Rissmiller converting the Barons other chance. The two regulation goals were scored by Tomas Plihal, his third, and Grant Stevenson, his second. Shane Joseph recorded two assists on the evening and Stevenson added an assist to give him a two-point night.
11/13/04 Cleveland 3 - Hamilton 0... Nolan Schaefer stood on his head in saving 33 shots to give the Barons their first shutout of the season. He was extremely impressive in the final period where he stopped 18 shots, including killing a 5-minute major penalty. The Barons jumped to an early 1-0 lead powered by a Christian Ehrhoff goal during the second minute of action. That goal would prove to be the game-winner, Ehrhoff's second against the Bulldogs this season. Late in the first period, the Barons would add to the lead as Shane Joseph scored his third goal of the season. In the second period, Garrett Stafford scored his second goal of the season on a power play tally. The win gives the Barons a 2-2-0-0 record against Hamilton this season.
Coming Up
11/18/04 vs. Houston - National City Rink located in Gund Arena
The Barons have outscored the Aeros 9-3 in gaining a 2-0-0-0 record to start the season series. The Barons were led by center Marcel Goc in those two games as he registered two goals and two assists. Dimitri Patzold started both games against the Aeros and posted a 2-0-0 record stopping 96.1% of the shots on net. His 1.50 goals against average includes 73 saves. Although the Barons are outscoring the Aeros in the season series, the Aeros have out-shot the Barons 76-51 thus far. Houston is playing well right now. Over the last 10 games, the Aeros are 6-3-0-1. Currently, they are tied for first in the West Division, although they have played 5 more games than Milwaukee, who they are tied with. The lifetime series between the two teams is 7-7-0-0 and Cleveland has won five out of the last six match-ups dating back to last season.
11/19/04 vs. Grand Rapids - National City Rink located in Gund Arena
The Barons and Griffins opened the season against each other as Grand Rapids was victorious 3-2 in a shootout. The Barons received goals from Tomas Plihal and Scott Dobben in the opener. Dimitri Patzold stopped 24 shots in the 65 minutes of work. Meanwhile, Joey MacDonald stopped 30 shots for Grand Rapids. On the season, MacDonald is fourth in the league in goals against average (1.59). The home team has won 11 out of 15 games in the lifetime series between the two teams, including the last 5 contests. The Barons are 6(w)-7(l)-0(t)-1(ol)-1(sol) against the Griffins in their four-year series.
11/20/04 @ Grand Rapids - Van Andel Arena
Dimitri Patzold loves playing the Griffins. In three games against the defending West Division Champion, the native of Kazakhstan has a 2-0-1 record with a 1.62 goals against average, a .938 save percentage, and one shutout. The Griffins have won their Division the last two seasons (03-04 - West; 02-03 - Central).
College ID Night
The Barons will host a College ID Night on Thursday night. Students presenting a valid college ID can purchase a lower-bowl $21 ticket for just $5. The Barons will battle the Houston Aeros on Thursday at 7pm at the National City Rink located in Gund Arena.
National City Bank Night
Every Friday night, fans can purchase $16 tickets at a 2-for-1 special when presenting a National City Bank card at the Gund Arena Box Office. The offer is only valid at the Gund Arena Box Office. The Barons will play the Grand Rapids Griffins this Friday night at 7pm at the National City Rink located in Gund Arena.
Barons Player of the Week
The Cleveland Barons Player of the Week is goaltender Nolan Schaefer. Schaefer broke out of a 0-5-0 streak in a big way this week. On Thursday, Schaefer held the Manitoba Moose, who are fourth in the league in scoring averaging 3.25 goals per game, to just two goals. In addition, Schaefer was perfect in the overtime period and stopped 4 out of 5 players to earn the Barons first shootout victory. On Saturday night, Schaefer was perfect in helping even the season series against division rival Hamilton. Stopping 33 shots, Schaefer helped turn aside a 5-minute major early in the third period. The shutout was the first of the season for Cleveland and got the Barons back to the .500 mark on the season (6-6-1-1). His play earned him the first star in both contests. In total for the week, Schaefer was 2-0-0 with a .96 goals against average and a .968 save percentage. Manitoba and Hamilton are a combined 16-9-3-3 this season.
Halloran Holiday Skate
The Cleveland Barons will host the Second Annual Halloran Holiday Skate with the Barons on Sunday, December 5th from 1-4pm at Halloran Park in Cleveland. The Barons roster will take shifts skating with families throughout the day. Complimentary hot cocoa, hot dogs, and popcorn will be available at the FREE event. Halloran Park is located on West 117th Street and Linnet Avenue in Cleveland.
Interesting Statistics Of The Week
With three games against West Division opponents on the slate this week, the Barons may feel comfortable. Last season, the Barons posted a 15-7-3-3 record against the West. This season, the Barons have yet to taste defeat in regulation to a West Division team posting a 2-0-1-1 record. Combined, the Barons have a 17-7-4-4 record against the West the last two seasons with a winning percentage of .656. The Barons have gained at least one point in 78.1% of those 32 games (25/32).
Patzold Strikes Gold
Dimitri Patzold has been stellar in his last twelve AHL starts dating back to last season. In those games, Patzold owns seven wins, four losses, and one shootout loss (7-4-1). Those 12 games encapsulated 724:41 and Patzold has a .934 (380/407) and a 2.24 goals against average. On the season, Patzold is 4-2-1 with a 2.25 goals against average and a .929 save percentage. Patzold is tied for 17th in save percentage and tied for 12th in goals against average among league goaltenders.
The Best Defense Is A Good Offense
Christian Ehrhoff, a defenseman, leads the Barons in shots with 50 on the season. Those 50 shots are second among all AHL defensemen and tied for 8th overall. Ehrhoff tied a Barons franchise record on November 6th against Hamilton with 10 shots. Ehrhoff is also mixed in the defenseman leader board in several other categories including: goals (T-1st, 4), points (T-8th, 9), and game-winning goals (T-1st, 2). Last season, he averaged nearly three shots per contest in 27 games with the Barons. Ehrhoff led the Barons with 36 shots in 9 games during last season's Playoffs. His two game-winners both came against Hamilton. Ehrhoff has one point in the last two games.
Sugar Shane
Shane Joseph, a right wing, has recorded one goal and two assists in the last three games. On Thursday against Manitoba, Joseph assisted on both of the regulation goals in the Barons 3-2 shootout victory. Joseph scored an even-strength goal on Saturday against Hamilton. Joseph leads the Barons in rookie scoring with 7 points and is tied for 14th in the league among rookies. Among the leagues rookies, his 3 goals are tied for 11th and his 4 assists are tied for 12th.
A Generous Grant
Grant Stevenson, a center, has been on fire the last two games. In that time, Stevenson has one goal and two assists. His 9 shots in those two games lead the Barons during that span. Stevenson is now tied for sixth on the Barons in points with 6 (2-4-6). Over the last four games, Stevenson is a +3.
Oh My Goc!
With 14 points on the season, Marcel Goc is tied for 13th in the league and leads the Barons in points. His 7 goals also lead the Barons and they tie him for the 11th most in the league. His three short-handed goals lead the league.
Staff Report
Defenseman Garrett Stafford recorded 2 goals and 2 assists in his last six games. Both of Stafford's goals have come via the power play.
Great Scott
Scott Dobben has been very accurate to this point. His 3 goals, tied for second on the team, have come on only 6 shots for a shooting percentage of .500. Dobben is second on the Barons in rookie points and is tied for the team lead among all rookies in goals.
Food Drive
On Tuesday, November 23rd, the Barons and SoftRock 102.1-FM WDOK will hold a food drive as part of the WDOK/NewsChannel 5 WEWS Feed-A-Family program. There will be collection areas at each entrance at the game against the Houston Aeros. Any non-perishable food item will be accepted. The proceeds from this campaign are divided equally between the Salvation Army and the Hunger Network of Greater Cleveland.
