December 5, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Manchester Monarchs News Release
PORTLAND, ME - Nick Shore, Jordan Weal and Brian O'Neill were all stopped by Portland goalie Mike McKenna in a shootout as the Monarchs lost to the Pirates, 3-2, on Friday night at the Cross Insurance Arena. It marked the first time Manchester went to a shootout this season.
Alexandre Bolduc scored the only goal for either side in the shootout to secure the win for the Pirates (13-9-0-0), their first victory in the VIP Cup Series this season.
The Monarchs (13-5-1-1) are winless in two straight games following a nine-game point streak from Nov. 8-28.
Manchester surrendered two goals in a 10-second span in the first period when Brendan Shinnimin and Lucas Lessio scored at 11:52 and 12:02 in the opening frame, respectively.
Nic Dowd put the Monarchs on the board at 18:54 in the first period when he ripped a wrist shot past Mike McKenna. It was his second goal in his last three games and his third goal of the season overall.
Zach O'Brien tied it at 2-2 when he went top shelf for his third goal of the season at 1:40 in the second period.
Neither team scored in the third period, despite Manchester outshooting the Pirates 10-5.
The seven-minute overtime period was scoreless after playing four-on-four hockey the entire time.
After Shore and Weal were denied in the shootout, Bolduc beat J.F. Berube with a wrist shot to the far side. O'Neill needed to score to extend it to a fourth round, but McKenna made a pad save that deflected wide.
The Monarchs are back in action tomorrow night when they host Norfolk at the Verizon Wireless Arena at 7 p.m. They close out the weekend with a 3 p.m. game against the Admirals on Sunday.
Notes:
Tonight was Manchester's first shootout loss since Feb. 21, 2014 when it fell to Springfield, 4-3. The Monarchs have gone to overtime four times this season, with two wins, one loss and one shootout loss in those games. J.F. Berube stopped 24 of 26 shots prior to the shootout.
