Sharks Shade IceCaps 1-0
December 5, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
St. John's IceCaps News Release
Daniil Tarasov scored the game-winner early in the third period as the Worcester Sharks topped the St. John's IceCaps 1-0 at Mile One Centre on Friday night.
Connor Hellebuyck was strong in net for the IceCaps and finished the night with 41 saves but the team was unable to beat Sharks starting goaltender Aaron Dell, who earned a 20-save, shutout victory.
The Sharks and the IceCaps skated to a scoreless first period but it wasn't without some action. Worcester's offense was flying early as they registered 15 shots on goal in the opening frame alone. St. John's and Worcester combined for five minor penalties but neither team was able to find the back of the net.
The Sharks continued their strong play through the second period and pushed their lead on the shot clock to 31-10 after 40 minutes but Hellebuyck remained focused to keep the opposition off the score sheet.
The Sharks were finally able to squeeze one behind Hellebuyck with 16:48 left in the third period. Tarasov capitalized on a goalmouth scramble to slide the puck behind Hellebuyck with assists going to Taylor Fedun and Chris Tierney. The goal was reviewed by off-ice officials but the call on the ice remained.
The IceCaps coaching staff pulled Hellebuyck in the dying minutes of the third but they were unable to find the back of the net.
The win is Worcester's second in their last nine games, while the IceCaps have now dropped three straight games by a score of 1-0.
The IceCaps and Sharks face off again tomorrow night at Mile One Centre with puck drop scheduled for 7:30 p.m. NT. Catch all the action with broadcaster Brian Rogers at www.stjohnsicecaps.com and 930 AM This is Newfoundland Labrador, or watch on Rogers TV and www.ahllive.com.
