Portland Pirates News Release

Portland, Me.- The Portland Pirates (13-9-0-0) beat the Manchester Monarchs (13-5-1-1) in dramatic fashion Friday night with a 3-2 shootout victory. The game brought the Pirates their fifth straight win, and pulled them within two points of the Monarchs for the number one position in the Atlantic Division. This is the second time this season that the Pirates have won five straight games. It was the first time the Pirates have headed to a shoot out this season.

The Pirates attacked in the first period with back-to-back goals from Brendan Shinnimin and Lucas Lessio just 10 seconds apart. Shinnimin found the back of the net at 11:52, assisted by Justin Hodgman and Joel Hanley. Immediately after, Lessio scored off the faceoff at 12:02, with Hanley and Alex Bolduc getting the assists. Manchester fired back with a goal at 18:54 in the period, with a goal from Nic Dowd, assisted by Jeff Schultz and Sean Backman.

Manchester netted another not even two minutes into the second period, with Zach O'Brien tying the game up at 1:40. Despite a lot of power play opportunities, the teams went scoreless through the remainder of the second and through the third period.

Portland and Manchester got through the seven-minute overtime period without any scoring, and due to there being no whistles called after the 4 minute mark, the play remained at 4-on-4 throughout. Because of the deadlock, the game went to a shootout. It got all the way to round three, but Bolduc scored for the Pirates to give Portland a 1-0 shootout advantage. Mike McKenna (8-7-0) was able to block one final shot from O'Brien, and the Pirates took the victory. All told, McKenna stopped 32 of the 34 shots he faced. Manchester's Jean-Francois Berube (10-4-2) blocked 24 of 26 the Pirates' shots.

The Pirates travel to Albany tomorrow to take on the Devils at 5 p.m. They will then travel to Providence on Sunday and face off against the Bruins at 3:05 p.m. The Pirates return home for another VIP Cup presented by VIP Tires and Service matchup against the Monarchs on Friday, December 12 at 7 p.m. Fans are asked to bring teddy bears

and stuffed animals to that game to take part in the Pirates' Teddy Bear Toss. Call 207- PIRATES for tickets and more information.
