MANCHESTER, NH - The Manchester Monarchs couldn't make it four wins in a row, and fell to the Reading Royals, 5-3, Wednesday morning at SNHU Arena on Education Day.

The Monarchs (8-4-1-1) dropped their first meeting of the season against the Royals (7-3-1-0), and look to rebound Friday night at home against Worcester.

The Royals opened the scoring when Tyler Brown scored his 2nd goal of the season at 10:54 of the first period. Brown took a stretch pass off the boards from Matt Wilkins and went on a partial breakaway. Brown made a forehand-to-backhand move on Monarchs goaltender, Evan Cowley, and slid the puck home for the 1-0 Royals lead.

Reading extended their lead when Wilkins scored his 2nd goal of the season at 3:33 of the second period. Wilkins carried the puck down the right wing, held the puck to the dot and finally ripped a shot over the glove of Cowley, to push the Reading lead to 2-0.

The Monarchs got on the board when Colton Saucerman scored his 2nd goal of the year at 3:55 of the middle frame. Saucerman corralled the puck at the right point and sent a seeing-eye wrister through traffic and past Royals goaltender, Mark Dekanich, to make it a 2-1 game.

The Royals took their two-goal lead back at 11:25 of the second period when Michael Huntebrinker scored his 1st goal of the season. While on the power play, Huntebrinker crashed the slot where he redirected a Wilkins pass up and over the left shoulder of Cowley, to make it a 3-1 Reading advantage.

Reading made it a 4-1 game when Nolan Zajac scored his 3rd goal of the season at 3:24 of the third period. Immediately after being released from the penalty box, Zajac was sprung on a breakaway by Loic Leduc and beat Cowley to add to the Reading lead.

Sam Kurker cut the Royals lead in half when he scored his 5th goal of the season at 6:15 of the third period. Kurker was camped in the slot where he deflected a Craig Wyszomirski shot that trickled through Dekanich, to make it a 4-2 deficit.

The Monarchs got to within one goal when Matt Schmalz recorded his 1st goal of the season at 18:25 of the final frame. Schmalz took a feed from Jordan LaVallee-Smotherman in the slot, and sent a wrister past a down-and-out Dekanich to inch the Monarchs closer, 4-3.

The Manchester comeback wasn't meant to be, and Matt Willows sealed the deal for Reading when he scored and empty-net-goal at 19:21 of the third period.

The Monarchs are back on the ice Friday, Nov. 17 (p.m.), when they host the Worcester Railers at SNHU Arena in a North Division battle.

Saturday night, the Monarchs and the DEA will host the first DEA Night at SNHU Arena. The Monarchs Care Foundation, Remove the Mask and the DEA will raise funds and awareness for opioid prevention across New Hampshire. For tickets to the game, click HERE .
