Manchester Monarchs News Release
ELMIRA, N.Y. - Two points each from Matt Leitner, Joe Diamond and Stefan Legein powered the Manchester Monarchs past the Elmira Jackals Saturday night, as the Monarchs beat their division foe, 4-2, at First Arena in Elmira, N.Y.
With the win, the Monarchs (2-2-0-0) took the first of 11 matches with the Jackals (3-4-0-0) this season.
"I thought we really established our game early on which was important for us," Head Coach Rich Seeley said. "We were ready from the drop of the puck, and it was nice to see that when we were tested, we were able to respond well."
The Monarchs started the scoring early, when Maxim Kitsyn broke the ice for his first goal of the season. Kitsyn took a pass from Matt MacKenzie and broke out on a 2-on-1 with Matt White. The right wing fired a shot from the right slot, and beat Jackals goalie Sam Marotta at 3:02 in the first period.
Leitner extended the lead 2:40 into the second period, scoring his second goal of the season. Alex Lintuniemi fired a shot from the left point that Marotta saved with his blocker, but the rebound fell directly behind the Elmira goalie and Leitner tapped the puck in for the 2-0 lead.
Manchester pushed the lead to 3-0 when Legein scored his first goal of the season at 5:02 of the second period. Diamond started the play from the left-wing half-boards and slipped the puck to Leitner, who then found a streaking Legein across the ice to complete the tic-tac-toe passing play. Legein had an open net to shoot in, and buried the puck.
Monarchs goalie, Michael Houser, stood on his head late in the second period, stopping nine shots while the Jackals were on a four-minute power play and 15 total in the period, helping to preserve the lead.
Elmira finally figured Houser out while on the power play, when Spiro Goulakos put the Jackals on the board with his first goal of the season at 17:36. Goulakos fired a slap shot from the top of the slot, and beat the Monarchs goalie.
With the Elmira net empty, Alex Roach buried the Jackals with his first goal of the season,18:36 into the third period.
The Jackals made a late push, as Tyler Currier potted his second of the season at 18:54, but it was too little, too late for the Jackals.
The Monarchs are back on the ice Friday, Nov. 6, when they travel to Ontario to battle the Brampton Beast for the start of a three-game weekend set.
