Nailers vs. Mallards Game Day Snap Shot

October 31, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release

Spooked by the Power Play

The Wheeling Nailers ran into the lone remaining undefeated team in the ECHL on Friday night, as they played host to the Adirondack Thunder in the first of three straight games at WesBanco Arena. While Wheeling matched 6-0-0 Adirondack at even strength with one goal each, it was the Thunder power play that made the difference. Rob Bordson netted a pair of goals on the man advantage, and Mitchell Heard added a third on the power play, as the visitors skated away with the 4-1 win. Patrick McGrath scored the lone marker for the Nailers, who received 21 saves from Franky Palazzese. Ken Appleby was the winning goaltender for Adirondack, as he stopped 31 of the 32 shots he faced.

A Treat That Led to a Trick

The Quad City Mallards are also playing their second game in as many nights, after taking on the Norfolk Admirals at Norfolk Scope Arena. The Admirals skated out to a 2-0 lead, before Quad City rallied with two goals in the final 5:01 of regulation, tying the score to earn one point and force overtime. The two markers came from Olivier Archambault at 14:59, then Guillaume Gelinas with 60 seconds to go. The 3-on-3 overtime session didn't settle anything, as the contest progressed to a shootout. Both Norfolk shooters dented the twine, while the Mallards went 1-for-3, giving the Admirals the bonus point. Both netminders made 37 saves during the game, as Ty Rimmer defeated Steve Michalek.

Lighting the Pat O' Lantern

Patrick McGrath scored the lone goal in Friday night's game for the Nailers, as he banged in the rebound of Harrison Ruopp's shot from the blueline. While McGrath is known more for his fists, his offensive productivity has steadily increased throughout his professional career. After tallying just one assist as a rookie, Patrick recorded three goals, five assists, and eight points in his second year with Wheeling, while also earning a call-up from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. The Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania native has already accumulated 15 penalty minutes to go along with Friday's marker, giving him 451 of those in his pro career. Ruopp's assist was his first of the season and fifth in 52 games as a Nailer.

Let's Try the Other Neighborhood

For the third straight home game, fans at WesBanco Arena will see a team making its debut in the Ohio Valley. The Nailers clashed with the Brampton Beast in their home opener, followed by the Adirondack Thunder on Friday night, and the Quad City Mallards on Saturday. This will be the first of 13 games for Wheeling against the Western Conference this season, with all 13 tilts taking place against the five teams from the Midwest Division. This is the second of back-to-back contests for the Mallards against Eastern Conference teams, following Friday's 3-2 shootout setback in Norfolk. Quad City will play a total of nine non-conference games, doing battle with Kalamazoo (4), Wheeling (3), Toledo (1), and Norfolk (1).

Who's That Knocking on Our Door

Saturday night marks the first of three head-to-head meetings between the Nailers and Mallards this season, as well as the first ever battle between the two squads. Quad City was one of seven teams to join the ECHL in the summer of 2014, after previously playing in the Central Hockey League. That stint lasted for four seasons, as the city of Moline, Illinois has seen hockey in six different professional leagues. All but one of their teams was known as the Quad City Mallards, with the lone exception being the AHL's Quad City Flames, who took the ice from 2007-09. Historically, this will be Wheeling's third opponent from Illinois, joining the Chicago Express and Peoria Rivermen. This will be the lone contest between the clubs at WesBanco Arena, as the two sides will meet again at iWireless Center on December 18th and 19th.
