Monarchs Dominate Marlies With Six Goals In 60 Minutes

TORONTO, ON - Right wing Alexandre Daigle collected four points as the Manchester Monarchs return to their winning ways with a 6-1 victory over the Toronto Marlies in front of 3,729 fans at the Ricoh Coliseum on Friday night.
Manchester (40-27-2-4, 86 points) is in third place in the Atlantic Division. Toronto (38-26-6-2, 84 points) sits in fourth place in the North Division.
Left wing Dany Roussin started the scoring furry for the Monarchs with his third goal of the season, unassisted, at 1:13 of the first period. Stealing the puck in neutral territory, Roussin skated down the center of the Marlies zone and flipped a backhander over Toronto's goaltender Jean-Francois Racine.
With numerous family members in the crowd, Toronto native Greg Hogeboom put his ninth goal of the season on the board at 8:51 of the opening stanza. Left wing Noah Clarke sent the puck behind the Marlies net to Daigle. Weighing his options, Daigle sent the puck out front and Hogeboom sent his shot soaring into the net to give the Monarchs a 2-0 lead.
In the second period, the Monarchs continued their scoring dominance with tallies from right wing Ryan Murphy and left wing Petr Kanko. Daigle picked the puck up behind the net and passed it to center Connor James at the right corner of Toronto's goal crease. James redirected the puck over toMurphy at the left face-off circle who floated a slap shot over a sprawled out Racine. Murphy's fifth goal of the season came at the 47-second mark of the middle frame.
Kanko's 14th tally of the season, fourth shorthanded goal, gave Manchester a 4-0 lead at 17:53 of the second period. While Monarchs defenseman Richard Petiot sat in the penalty box for boarding, defenseman Marty Wilford dove to poke the puck out of Manchester's zone and to center ice. Kanko picked up the loose puck on a breakaway, skated down the center of the Marlies zone and backhanded the puck into the top of the net, almost identical to the move that Roussin made for his goal in the first period.
Toronto replaced Racine with goaltender Todd Ford following the close of the second period.
Daigle added two goals in the third period to his two assists for a four-point evening. His first goal of the night, fourth of the season came at 3:53 when he picked up the rebound from defenseman Joe Rullier's shot and sent the puck into the open net. Wilford collected his second assist of the night on the goal.
The Monarchs sixth and final goal came at 7:28 of the final stanza when Clarke won the face-off, Hogeboom nudged the puck over to Daigle and Daigle carried the puck from the right corner of the Marlies zone over to the left face-off circle. Daigle then fired a shot top shelf over Ford.
Right wing Aleksander Suglobov robbed Monarchs goaltender Adam Hauser of his third shutout of the season by sending his 29th goal past Hauser while the Marlies were on the power play at 11:58 of the third period. Center John Pohl sent the puck over to Suglobov at the left face-off dot. Suglobov fired the puck over Hauser's glove to put Toronto on the board. Center John Mitchell also assisted on the Marlies lone goal.
Hauser (21-14-2) earned the win with 34 saves. Racine (16-12-0) took the loss for the Marlies stopping 16 of 20 shots in the first two periods. Ford stopped 13 shots in the final frame.
Manchester went 0-for-4 on the power play. Toronto was 1-for-4 with the man advantage.
The Monarchs continue their only trip to Canada this season by visiting the Hamilton Bulldogs at the Copps Coliseum on Saturday, April 1 with a 7:00 p.m. puck drop.
