
P-Bruins Fall to Pirates, Clinch Playoff Birth

Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins fell to the Portland Pirates 4-1 Friday evening at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. With a Lowell Lock Monster loss the P-Bruins have clinched a playoff birth. The P-Bruins got two goals from Pascal Pelletier. The P-Bruins are now 37-28-1-5 on the season, 80 points and in fourth place in the Atlantic Division.
The Pirates scored the only goal in the opening period at the 18:16 mark. Zenon Konopka worked the puck behind the P-Bruins net up along the boards for Dustin Penner. He sent a pass into the slot where Ryan Shannon awaited and put it past P-Bruins goaltender Derek Gustafson.
In the second period the Pirates extended their lead, when Penner scored his 34th goal of the season on the power play. Kent Huskins had the lone assist as Portland took a 2-0 lead. The P-Bruins cut the lead in half at the 15:05 mark as Kris Versteeg cut down the left wing. He sent a pass into the slot for Pelletier who got the puck past Pirates netminder Jani Hurme. Portland went into the second intermission leading 3-1 after Bruno St. Jacques tallied at the 15:53 mark. Ladislav Smid and Penner had the assists.
In the third period the Pirates went on top 4-1 with a goal from Pierre Parenteau at the 1:56 mark. Aaron Rome and Tim Stapelton had the assists. The P-Bruins pulled with two at the 18:52 mark when Pelletier scored his second goal of the game. Versteeg got his second assist of the night, while Ben Guite had the other. With time running out the P-Bruins were unable to get any closer and fell 4-2.
Gustafson stopped 20 of 24 shots for the P-Bruins, while Hurme stopped 31 of 33 shots for the Pirates. The P-Bruins went 0 for 4 on the power play, while Portland was 1 for 6 on the man advantage.
The P-Bruins head back on the road Saturday, April 1 versus the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at Bridgeport's Arena at Harbor Yard at 7:05 p.m. and wrap up next weekend at home at the Dunkin' Donuts Center Sunday, April 2 versus the Springfield Falcons at 4:05 p.m. Tickets for all P-Bruins regular season home games are available online at providencebruins.com, at the Dunkin' Donuts Center box office and at all TicketMaster outlets.
