Binghamton Senators News Release
BINGHAMTON, NY - The Binghamton Senators beat the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins for a second consecutive game 2-0 on Friday before a crowd of 4,278 at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. Goaltender Kelly Guard stopped all 27 shots he faced for the fourth shutout of his rookie season.
Defenseman Jan Platil gave Binghamton a 1-0 lead 57 seconds into the middle period, and only nine seconds after play resumed following an injury to Penguins defenseman Chris Kelleher caused by a collision with the boards near the penalty boxes. Kelleher was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for evaluation.
Binghamton maintained their 1-0 lead when defenseman Lance Ward and winger Danny Bois received minor penalties only two seconds apart to give the Penguins a five-on-three advantage for one minute and 58 seconds. But Binghamton responded to the challenge and kept Wilkes-Barre/Scranton from equalizing the score.
Denis Hamel scored his 49th goal of the season into an empty net at 19:28 of the final period. Platil picked up his second point of the night, an assist, on the Hamel goal.
Penguins goalie Dany Sabourin stopped 30 of 31 shots in the loss. Both teams were held scoreless on the power play with Binghamton receiving seven chances and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton getting five opportunities.
Binghamton returns to action tomorrow night as the Norfolk Admirals visit the Arena. Tickets for the 7:05 p.m. game are still available. Call (607) 722-SENS for ticket information.
