ECHL Kansas City Mavericks

Missouri Denied by Wichita

Kansas City Mavericks News Release

Independence, MO - The Missouri Mavericks took a disappointing 4-1 defeat from Independence Cup rival, the Wichita Thunder, on Friday night at Independence Events Center.

One of the newest editions to the Mavericks, forward Jack Downing-acquired from the South Carolina Stingrays earlier this week, netted the only goal for Missouri on Friday night.

Despite an aggressive start by the Missouri Mavericks through the first half of the opening period filled with big hits and dominant puck possession, the Thunder were first to notch a point on the scoreboard when Erick Lizon scored on goaltender Maxime Lagace at 11:12. Wichita caught stride and quickly piled up shots on goal, netting their second point of the contest for a 2-0 lead. Nikita Kashirsky was credited with the Thunder goal, assisted by Mike Wilson and former Mav, Kenton Miller.

Tensions were high at the top of the second period as four players were sent to the sin bin for roughing after a flare of fisticuffs action at the Wichita end of the ice (Milan-4 min roughing, Walker- 2 min roughing, Brittain-2 min roughing, Crane-2 min roughing). Then before the first ten minutes could pass, another bought between Martin Lee and Erick Lizon at the Wichita end sent another crew of players to the penalty box (Lee-5 min fighting, Lizon-5 min fighting, Crane-10 min game misconduct, Trebish-10 min game misconduct).

It was the penalty to Sebastian Geoffrion at 15:53 of the third period (slashing) that gave the Thunder the opportunity to take a 3-0 lead over the Mavs, and they did just that, with Ian Lowe putting away a power play goal at 17:06.

Only 1:05 into the third frame the Mavs found their way onto the scoreboard with a goal from forward Jack Downing, aided by Sebastian Geoffrion and Alex Lepkowski to make it 3-1. The third period looked to be going the Mavericks way as they commanded puck possession, taking eight shots on goal before the Thunder could manage one in the first half of the period. But Wichita only needed two shots before they slipped another past net-minder Maxime Lagace to expand their lead 4-1 over Missouri.

The Mavericks play their next game on the road Saturday night against the Quad City Mallards at 7:05pm (CST) at the iWireless Center. Fans can catch the game at Strikerz Entertainment Center - The Official Away Game Watch Party Destination of the Missouri Mavericks!
