Syracuse Mets News Release
Allentown, PA - The Syracuse Mets concluded a nightmare of a road trip to Coca-Cola Park against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs with a 9-2 loss to Lehigh Valley on Sunday night. With the loss, Syracuse dropped all six games of the series to Lehigh Valley, and the Mets have lost seven consecutive games for the first time this season.
Lehigh Valley (71-59, 35-22) struck first in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, Weston Wilson homered to give the IronPigs a 1-0 lead. Darick Hall followed with a walk, and after Matt Kroon flied out right field, Simon Muzziotti walked to put runners at first and second base. Aramis Garcia followed with a two-out RBI single, scoring Hall to make it a 2-0 Lehigh Valley advantage.
The IronPigs broke the game open in the second. With runners at first and second and one out, Wilson was back at the plate and tormenting the Mets. Wilson launched a three-run home to extend Lehigh Valley's lead to five, 5-0. Wilson now has 29 home runs this season, ranking third in the International League
Lehigh Valley added a run in the fourth. Wilson had a one-out double, and Kroon had a two-out double, scoring Wilson to make it a 6-0 ballgame.
Syracuse (52-77, 19-36) finally got on the board in the top of the sixth. Danny Mendick led off the inning with a home run down the left-field line to trim the deficit to five, 6-1. This was Mendick's first game with Syracuse since July 21st after spending the last month-and-a-half in the majors with the New York Mets. Daniel Palka followed with a home run over the wall in right-center field to pull Syracuse within four, 6-2. Palka had hits in all six games of the series against Lehigh Valley, including three home runs and two doubles. Palka is back with Syracuse after signing a minor-league contract with the New York Mets last week.
That was as close as Syracuse would get though. Lehigh Valley scored a run in the bottom of the sixth and two runs in the seventh while shutting the Syracuse offense down the rest of the game for the 9-2 Lehigh Valley victory.
The Mets return home to Syracuse to begin a six-game series against the Rochester Red Wings at NBT Bank Stadium on Tuesday. Left-hander Joey Lucchesi is slated to start on the mound for Syracuse. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
