Megannety Scores First Pro Goal to Lead Beast to Third Win in Four Games
March 26, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Brampton Beast News Release
ELMIRA, NEW YORK - Mike Vernace's power play goal gave the Brampton Beast a 2-1 edge early in the second period but the resilient Elmira Jackals stormed back with four unanswered goals to defeat the Beast 5-2, snapping the Beast's two-game winning streak at First Arena in Elmira on Friday night.
Jeff Brown registered his second consecutive game with a goal and an assist and Nick McParland extended his point streak to three games for the Beast, who have recorded just one win in eight games against the Jackals this season.
Brown gave the Beast the early lead in the first period as he got his stick on a shot from David Ling and redirected it perfectly over the shoulder of Jackals starting goaltender Shane Owen at 11:57.
Ling's assist was his 39th as a member of the Beast, moving him into second place alone in Beast franchise history (including both CHL and ECHL) in that category.
Elmira would respond before the end of the period as Ian Young teed up a shot that beat Beast starting goaltender Kenny Reiter with 2:05 remaining in the opening frame.
The Beast jumped ahead again early in the second. With Elmira's Zach Cohen in the box for tripping, Vernace settled down the puck at the left point and sent a perfect wrist shot through a crowd that beat Owen on the glove side, giving the Beast assistant captain his fifth tally of the season at 2:50 of the second.
The Jackals got a power play goal of their own to tie the game at 10:53. Colin Jacobs sent a hard shot on goal from the point that eluded Reiter, tying the game at 2-2.
Less than a minute later, Elmira would notch the eventual game-winner as former Beast defenseman Guy Leboeuf pounced on a rebound in front of Reiter and slid the puck along the ice to beat the goaltender for his first goal of the season at 11:56, giving the Jackals their first lead of the game heading into the third period.
The Beast and Jackals played an evenly-matched final frame, with each team recording seven shots on goal but a pair of Elmira goals from Matt Garbowsky and Jacob MacDonald sealed the victory for Elmira, their third win in a row.
Reiter gave his team a chance to win with a solid 28-save performance, while Jackals starter Shane Owen earned first star honours with 26 saves.
Notes: The Beast finished the game 1-for-4 on the power play and 4-for-6 on the penalty kill. Molson Three Stars: 3) Guy Leboeuf 2) Jacob MacDonald 1) Shane Owen.
The Beast and Jackals will resume their rivalry tomorrow night, Saturday, March 26 at First Arena in Elmira at 7:05 PM. The Beast will then return home to the Powerade Centre on Sunday, March 27 as they host the Toledo Walleye at 2:00 PM. Single game tickets are now available, starting at $16.25.
