Jackals Split Weekend Series with 3-1 Loss to Brampton
March 26, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Elmira Jackals News Release
ELMIRA, NY - March 26, 2016 - Kyle Stroh scored his 10th goal of the season and Shane Owen stopped 28 shots, but the Jackals were unable to overcome a first period deficit and fell to the Brampton Beast, 3-1. Elmira's three-game winning streak was snapped as well as their five-game winning streak against Brampton.
Brampton opened the scoring with a fortuitous bounce at 14:19 of the first period. Patrick Megannety held the puck behind the net and incidentally banked it off of a Jackals defender in the slot and past Shane Owen. Megannety's first professional goal was assisted by Luc-Olivier Blain and David Ling.
The Beast doubled their lead at 17:25 of the opening frame with another fortunate carom from behind the net. Mike Hammond carried the puck below the goal line and behind the net attempting a wraparound that was heading wide but banked off of Owen's stick in the crease and behind him. Hammond's sixth goal of the season was assisted by Joey West and Mitch Zion, who each earned their first professional point.
The Jackals countered with a late strike at 19:37 of the first period to cut the deficit to one after the opening frame. Spiro Goulakos carried the puck down the left wing wall deep into the Brampton end and threaded a pass into the slot for Kyle Stroh who was waiting on the doorstep to bang home his 10th goal of the season.
The second period melted away as Shane Owen stopped all seven shots faced and Jordan Ruby turned aside all eight that came in his directions.
The Jackals ramped up the pressure in the third period but were unable to push another past Ruby. Brampton regained its two-goal lead at 13:19 of the final frame as Steve Mele fired a wrist shot past Owen for his third goal of the season.
Elmira pulled Owen for the extra attacker with just under three minutes remaining, but Ruby held off the late charge and preserved the win for the Beast.
Owen stopped 28 of 31 shots faced but suffered his first loss as a member of the Jackals, dropping to 7-1-0 in eight starts. Jordan Ruby turned aside 33 of 34 shots faced to earn the win.
